Prior to allowing a handoff to a new base station, the subscriber station verifies that its reverse link signal is being received by the destination base station with sufficient energy. The determination is made based on the received reverse link power control commands from the base station. Moreover, a handoff may be forced when the base station providing the best forward link signal in not receiving the reverse link signal from the subscriber station with sufficient energy.

In an embodiment, an access terminal may group a plurality of pilot signals characterized by different frequencies into one or more pilot groups, each pilot grouping being identified by a plurality of parameters (e.g., a PN offset and a group ID). Each pilot group may include pilot signals having substantially the same coverage area. The access terminal may further select a representative pilot signal from each pilot group for pilot strength reporting. The access terminal may also use the pilot grouping for effective set management.

    摘要: Systems and methods for optimizing the allocation of resources to serve different types of data flows in a wireless communication system are disclosed. An exemplary method involves calculating data metrics for data in a plurality of queues. Each queue corresponds to a different data flow in the wireless communication system. The data metrics are used to determine a separate transmission metric for each of a plurality of possible transmission formats. The transmission metric for a given transmission format is dependent on the data metrics corresponding to allocated data for the given transmission format. A transmission format is selected that has an optimum transmission metric. The allocated data for the selected transmission format is transmitted on the forward link in accordance with the selected transmission format.

In an embodiment, a plurality of access points (e.g., servicing various cells in a broadcast area) may transmit a broadcast content in accordance with a rate set. The rate set may include a plurality of distinct data rates each associated with a transmission format, configured to allow the broadcast packets transmitted by the access points to be incrementally combined (e.g., on a per-slot basis at a subscribing AT). The data rates and corresponding transmission formats in the rate set may be selected in relation to the supportable data rates of the cells in the broadcast area, as well as the requirements for supporting soft handoff in these cells.
