摘要: A catheter having a proximal portion and a distal portion terminating in a distal tip, is provided with a spring assembly contained within its distal tip portion for providing a bias against side to side deflection of the distal tip. The assembly preferably includes a central wire having a first diameter, which central wire extends from the proximal portion of the catheter to the distal portion, and a plurality of wires secured to the central wire adjacent the distal end thereof. Each of the wires is stranded together, preferably twisted helically, around the central wire and preferably has a second diameter substantially smaller than the first diameter. Alternatively, the stranded wires can be attached along and parallel to the larger diameter wire, and the latter wire is of a substantially greater length than the stranded wires.

摘要: A steering mechanism including a steering shaft coupled to a controller which includes a handle and apparatus for manipulating the distal end of the steering shaft. The steering shaft includes a flexible coiled spring having a lead spring fixed in position with respect to a distal end thereof in the distal end of the steering shaft. One or more steering wires is affixed at the distal ends thereof to the lead spring. The steering wires extend through the steering shaft to the controller, and the steering apparatus of the controller is used to place tension on one or both of the steering wires. The attachment of the distal ends of the steering wires to the lead spring may be opposite one another or may be offset for providing greater maneuverability. Tension may be placed on the steering wires by wedges mounted transversely to the controller housing, or by rotation of a shaft mounted transversely to the controller housing, the steering wires being attached to the shaft such that rotation in one direction tenses one steering wire, and rotation in the other direction tenses the other steering wire. Two independently rotatable shafts may be used to separately control the two steering wires. The steering shaft is adapted for insertion into a lumen of a catheter for use in guiding the distal end of the catheter to a treatment site within a patient. The steering mechanism may also be used in conjunction with tools or apparatus which must reach into difficult locations, such as engines or other machines.

摘要: A reinforcing sleeve encloses a bendable electrode tip assembly for a catheter. The reinforcing sleeve is flexible enough to accommodate the bending movement desired for the electrode tip assembly. Still, the reinforcing sleeve provides added strength and resistance against wear and tear during repeated bending operations. The reinforcing sleeve also holds associated steering wires and electrical conducting wires in close intimate contact against the interior support wire of the electrode tip assembly. The intimate contact prevents kinking and chafing of the steering wires and electrical conducting wires during bending operations.

摘要: Ablation systems comprise a support body, an energy transmitting element supported by the support body and an insulating member covering a portion of the support body and energy transmitting member. Ablation energy is transmitted from an uncovered, exposed portion of the energy transmitting element. The insulating member may be a distal portion of an introducer sheath. An open segment may be provided in the distal portion to expose a portion of the energy transmitting element. When used in cardiac ablation therapy, for example, the insulating member decreases the amount of ablation energy dissipated in the blood circulating through the heart and thermally insulates the energy transmitting member and the tissue at the ablation site, enabling better control of the ablation process. An inflatable balloon or an expandable web may be provided coupled to the distal portion of the sheath behind the open segment to provide further insulation of the energy transmitting element and of the tissue around the ablation site. In another embodiment, ablation catheters incorporate an insulating member such as the inflatable balloon, expandable web or a cover. Methods of ablating tissue are also disclosed.

摘要: A collapsible electrode body is assembled to an end of a catheter tube. A generally rigid stem element having an exterior diameter is connected to the catheter tube. A flexible tube, which has an initial interior diameter smaller than the exterior diameter of the stem element, is deformed into a desired geometry for the electrode body, including a neck region with an enlarged interior diameter greater than the exterior diameter of the stem element. The neck region is slipped about the stem element. Heat is applied to shrink the neck region about the stem element and form a first interference fit junction therebetween. A sleeve is fitted about the first interference fit junction, and heat is applied to shrink the sleeve about the interference fit junction and form a second interference fit junction therebetween. Preferably, after the first interference fit junction is formed, additional heat is applied to thermally fuse the neck region to the stem region.
