Techniques for supporting eCalls are described. In an aspect, an eCall indicator may be used to indicate an eCall being established. In one design, a terminal may generate a message including an eCall indicator and may send the message to originate an eCall. The eCall indicator may indicate (i) whether or not a call is an eCall or (ii) whether an eCall is initiated automatically by the terminal or manually by a user. In another aspect, a terminal may avoid sending signaling for mobility management and connection management to wireless networks except for eCalls and designated calls. The terminal may avoid performing location updating, performing registration, responding to paging requests, etc. The terminal may exchange signaling with a wireless network for an eCall initiated by the terminal. After the eCall is initiated, the terminal may perform location updating with the wireless network and call establishment for the eCall.

A mobile terminal and network location server support multiple positioning protocols so that a first position measurement of the mobile terminal may be obtained using a positioning protocol defined for a first wireless network and a second position measurement of the mobile terminal may be obtained using a different positioning protocol defined for a different wireless network during the same location session. Techniques to support positioning for access points and terminals in WLANs and other wireless networks are described. In one aspect, WLAN positioning is supported with Secure User Plane Location (SUPL). A terminal obtains measurements for an access point in a WLAN and/or receives measurements made by the access point for the terminal. The terminal determines WLAN AP information for the access point and/or the terminal based on the measurements and sends the WLAN AP information to a SUPL Location Platform (SLP). The SLP determines a location estimate for the terminal based on the WLAN AP information. In another aspect, the terminal receives supported network information from the SLP. The terminal obtains network measurement information (e.g., measurements) for a radio access network and determines which particular network measurement information to send based on the supported network information. The terminal sends network measurement information permitted by the supported network information to the SLP.

A user equipment (UE) communicating with a radio access network (RAN) sends to a network entity (e.g., an MSC/SGSN) a request for periodic reporting of the UE location to a client entity. After the request is approved, the MSC/SGSN sends to the RAN signaling to initiate periodic location reporting for the UE. The RAN may request a positioning center (e.g., a SAS) to send assistance data to the UE. The RAN may coordinate and control the periodic location reporting or may pass the control over to the positioning center. For each location reporting, the UE sends location information (e.g., measurements made by the UE or a location estimate computed by the UE) to the RAN. The SAS computes a location estimate if the UE sends measurements. The RAN then sends the location estimate for the UE to the MSC/SGSN, which forwards the location estimate toward the client entity.

In one design, a terminal may receive a location service request from an application that is internal or external to the terminal. The terminal may exchange at least one message with a location server to establish an extended location session of a particular duration via the streamlined location service layer. The terminal can thereafter obtain location service from the location server at any time within the particular duration of the extended location session, e.g., whenever a location request is received from the application. The terminal may obtain location service any number of times and at any time during the extended location session. The terminal or application may emulate a more complex location service based on location information received from all of the times in which location service is obtained by the terminal.

Techniques for efficiently performing network selection using information stored at a terminal are described herein. The terminal may store coverage information for previously detected wireless networks, cell information for previously detected cells in wireless networks, usage information for previously accessed wireless networks, availability information for previously detected wireless networks, almanac information for cells in wireless networks (e.g., information on cells available at different locations and information for acquiring the cells), and/or other information that may be useful for network selection. The terminal may select a wireless network to attempt acquisition based on the stored coverage information and its current location, the stored cell information and information for the current location (e.g., an identity of a cell detected at the current location), the stored usage information, the stored availability information, and/or the stored almanac information.
