Abstract:
A method includes determining spectral interference in real time on an optical signal by an optical path, the spectral interference being indicative of polarization mode dispersion by the optical path, and imposing optical pulses with a phase opposite to the spectral interference on the optical signal. Preferably, the imposing step comprises altering the amplitude or phase of a signal indicative of the spectral interference with an active element. The active element is preferably an acousto-optic modulator.
Abstract:
A method of generating a dark-RZ pulse in an optical communications system with a dual-arm modulator by setting a direct current bias on the modulator to a specific value such that an output optical power from the modulator achieves a maximum value when the RF signals on the first and second arms of the modulator are off and maintaining the direct current bias at the specific value and applying RF signals to the first and second arms of the modulator and delaying one of the RF signals applied to one of the first and second arms relative to the other of the RF signals such that a dark-RZ pulse is generated with a duty cycle based on the delay. Another aspect of the invention provides a method for generating dense wave division multiplexing (DWDM) optical mm-waves in an optical transmission system by phase modulated DWDM optical signal and applying the phase modulated DWDM optical signal to an input port of an optical interleaver, the optical interleaver having a specified bandwidth to suppress the optical carriers and convert the DWDM optical signal to DWDM optical mm-waves; and amplifying the DWDM optical mm-waves and transmitting the DWDM optical mm-waves over single mode fiber (SMF).
Abstract:
Accessed memory locations of a data table are assigned weights based on usage history, and a hash table chains the highest-weight key values to an abbreviated hash index. The hash table includes keys having at least a predetermined weight so that highly accessed keys are identified by hashing. Additionally, the keys chained to a given hash index are ordered based on their weight in order to optimize the overall data retrieval time. The weights assigned to accessed keys are updated over time so that the content of the hash table is adaptively updated to suit the current table look-up requirements.

Abstract:
The present invention relates to a novel class of supermolecular carboplatin derivatives represented by general formula (I), wherein B is a polycarboxylic acid represented by general formula (II), wherein R1, R2 and n are defined as in the description. The present invention also relates to a process for preparing the same, pharmaceutical compositions containing the same as active ingredient and the use of the derivatives in the preparation of pharmaceutical compositions which are useful in treating various cellular cancers including hepatoma, stomach cancer, lung cancer and the like. The derivatives have stable cage-like chemical structures and constitutions in solid and in aqueous solution. The derivatives can not only kill cancer cells at a rate significantly higher than that by carboplatin, in particular, in the case of hepatoma cells, at a rate one to two times higher than that by carboplatin, but also produce little side effects such as vomit, baldness, decreases of leucocytes and platelets, and the like, which can be induced by administration of other chemotherapeutics. In the acute toxicity tests on mice, the lethal dose (LD50) of the present derivatives is about 300 mg/kg and 260 mg/kg body weight for a subcutaneous(sc) and an intraperitoneal(ip) administration, respectively. Therefore, the present derivatives are a novel class of cis-platium which can be widely used as anticancer agents.
Abstract:
A method and apparatus for performing design verification is described. In one embodiment, a method for performing design verification includes specifying at least one object that represents at least one signal as a symbol in a design using a first command and instructing a symbolic simulator with the first command to treat the at least one object as a symbol.
Abstract:
A luminescent material, such as phosphor, is radiated by energy propagated from the side of an optical fiber, causing the luminescent material to emit visible light. The luminescent material can be of a coincidentally-excited type, requiring the absorption of two wavelengths of radiation to emit visible light. In such a case, two side-emitting optical fibers can be used, with each optical fiber providing one of the needed radiation wavelengths. One embodiment of the invention involves a matrix of optical fibers forming an optical display panel made using coincidentally-excited phosphors. Side-emitting optical fibers are used to simultaneously stimulate a phosphor pixel located between the two fibers, allowing matrix addressing of each pixel individually. The optical display panel is constructed of only optical components. Another embodiment involves an optical switch with coincidentally-excited luminescent material. One radiation is provided by a side-emitting optical fiber. To activate the switch, a second radiation is provided by a laser diode.
Abstract:
A scanner has an optical-electric module, an incoherent fiber bundle, and a scanner head. The incoherent fiber bundle has illumination fibers and pickup fibers. The illumination fibers carry only illumination light from a light source in the O/E module toward the scanner head. The pickup fibers carry sensed light from the scanner head to a CCD array in the O/E module. The scanner head has a light guide that receives the illumination light from the illumination fibers. The light guide is in contact with the pickup fibers in an arrangement which permits the illumination light to enter the side of the illumination fibers near the end. Illumination light reflected back into the pickup fibers is guided to the CCD array.
