A controller (120), in response to receiving a request for a group call (201) targeting a group (101), allocates at least one power adjustment channel to the group call (202) and sends identification of the at least one power adjustment channel to at least some of the subscriber units in the group (203). Using the at least one power adjustment channel, the controller also sends unique power adjustment information to each of the at least some subscriber units (204). Unique power adjustment channel access information is also sent to the subscriber units so that each subscriber unit can receive its own unique power adjustment information (503) and adjust its inbound transmission power (504) in response. In this manner, efficient reverse power control is provided for multiple subscriber units thereby facilitating group calls in CDMA systems.

The present invention provides a method and apparatus for group calls in wireless CDMA communication systems, addressing the need for reliable and efficient reverse power control in CDMA group calls. A communication infrastructure (108-110) upon receiving a group call request from a communication unit (e.g., 103), allocates a single voice channel (e.g., 120-121) in each cell that provides service to one or more communication units of the group (101). The communication infrastructure further allocates a reverse power control channel (e.g., 125-127) to each communication unit of the group. Thus, each communication unit of the group receives voice information for the group call via the voice channel in that communication unit's site or cell, and each communication unit receives inbound (i.e., reverse) power control information via the reverse power control channel allocated to that communication unit. In this manner, the present invention efficiently provides reverse power control information to multiple communication units and, therefore, facilitates the establishment of group calls in CDMA systems.

A nozzle system for imparting compound motion, including an orbital component and a rotational component, to the discharged fluid. The nozzle system comprises a specially engineered shell surrounding a freely flexible hose of sufficient structural integrity to simultaneously exhibit two different motion characteristics to impart the compound motion to the discharged fluid. When fluid is delivered to the nozzle system, the hose moves orbitally; that is, the hose rides against the wall of the shell in a cork screwing manner. Simultaneously, the hose rotates or twists back and forth about its own axis relative to its fixed end. Both components of motion are imparted to the discharged fluid to enhance spray power and expanse.

Within a transmitter (101), a quantity of data (201) to be transmitted is parsed into variable length, uniquely identified messages (202), which are in turn parsed into fixed-length, uniquely identified blocks (207-211). Messages are buffered and then transmitted to a receiver (103). Upon reception of a message-received communication by the transmitter (101) corresponding to a particular buffered message, that particular message is unbuffered. Upon reception of a message-partially-received communication by the transmitter (101) corresponding to a particular buffered message, those blocks corresponding to portions of the particular buffered message that were not adequately received (703) are retransmitted.

A receiver may reduce the effects of distortion when determining signal usability in the following manner. Upon receiving a signal, the receiver separates a desired component, an undesired component, and a distortion component, wherein the desired component includes the signal that was originally transmitted and the undesired component includes interference and noise. Having isolated the distortion component, it can be mitigated such that the usability of the signal received can be determined based on a ratio between the desired and undesired components.

An improved protocol for a radio communications system (100) having a base station (103), radio units (101), an inbound channel (107) for conveying information from the radio units to the base station, an outbound channel (105) for conveying information from the base station to the radio units, a first unit of time is defined as a microslot (201, 203, 205), and a second unit of time is defined as a slot (207), the slot comprising an integral number of consecutive and contiguous microslots. The base station sends timing information to the radio units, and indicates to the radio units when the inbound channel is idle by, first, determining when a microslot time period has expired (303) and, when this occurs, then determining when a slot time period has expired (305). If a slot has expired, the base station then determines whether the inbound channel is idle. If the inbound channel is idle (307), the base station then sends (311) a first symbol to the radio units on the outbound channel, but if the inbound channel is busy, the base station sends (309) a second symbol to the radio units on the outbound channel. Otherwise, if a slot has not expired, the base station sends (313) a third symbol to the radio units on the outbound channel. In a four-level frequency shift keying (FSK) system, for instance, the first (idle) and second (busy) symbol may use a -3 and -3 relative FSK frequency offsets, and the third symbol may use either a +1 or -1 relative FSK frequency offset.
