The VCO responds to a filtered output voltage of a filter connected to a charge pump. A digital controller modifies the FMCW to generate a chirp phase and a return phase. The chirp phase includes a first linear change of the FMCW from a start frequency to a stop frequency. The return phase includes a second linear change of the FMCW from the stop frequency to the start frequency. A phase preset circuit connects to the digital controller and the filter. The phase preset circuit supplies a phase preset current during a start frequency time preceding the chirp phase. The phase preset current is proportional to a VCO gain of the VCO and inversely proportional to a chirp current during the chirp phase.

A method for cancelling phase noise in a radar signal is described herein. In accordance with one embodiment, the method includes transmitting an RF oscillator signal, which represents a local oscillator signal including phase noise, to a radar channel and receiving a respective first RF radar signal from the radar channel. The first RF radar signal included at least one radar echo of the transmitted RF oscillator signal. Further, the method includes applying the RF oscillator signal to an artificial radar target composed of circuitry, which applies a delay and a gain to the RF oscillator signal, to generate a second RF radar signal. The second RF radar signal is modulated by a modulation signal thus generating a frequency-shifted RF radar signal. Further, the method includes subtracting the frequency-shifted RF radar signal from the first RF radar signal.

The embodiments described herein use resonant circuits to provide isolation between closely proximate conductors. For example, these resonant circuits can be used to reduce unwanted electromagnetic coupling and minimize crosstalk energy between package leads, bonding wires, and circuit board traces on radio frequency (RF) electronic devices, including RF power amplifiers. To facilitate a reduction in electromagnetic coupling, the resonant circuit is configured resonate with the closely proximate conductors at a selected frequency f0, and when resonating at the selected frequency f0 the resonant circuit provides a path to ground for the crosstalk energy. This path to ground reduces the crosstalk energy that would otherwise be shared between the two closely proximate conductors, and thus provides the electromagnetic isolation between the conductors.

The present disclosure relates to a reconfigurable multicore inductor capacitor (LC) oscillator comprising a plurality of oscillator cores. The oscillator may be configured at run-time, at manufacturing, or at production, which may allow for the tailoring of operating characteristics of the oscillator, such as phase noise, electromagnetic interference, or power consumption, for a specific application after production. The cores are coupled through an interconnect network to a common electrical signal output. A subset of the cores may be selectively enabled while the remainder of the cores is disabled. The ability to enable only a subset of the cores allows the total number of enabled cores to be reconfigurable. Furthermore, the direction in which oscillation current flows through the inductor of the cores may be configured. Reconfiguring the number of enabled cores and/or the oscillation current direction in the cores allow operating characteristics of the oscillator to be tailored after production.

Provided herein are apparatus and methods for reducing supply noise conversion to phase noise. In certain configurations, voltage controlled elements such as varactors are used to control a VCO output frequency. A VCO transfer function relating supply voltage noise to a common node of a varactor gives rise to a transfer function of value a representing a push coefficient. An intentional amount of supply noise can be added to a tuning voltage by injecting it at a tuning port of the VCO. By splitting an integration capacitance in a loop filter, an integration capacitance can be divided among a capacitor divider to create a transfer function of value β representing a compensating coefficient. The injected noise from the capacitor divider can reduce VCO pushing by canceling the value α. When the value β is set equal to the value α, the VCO pushing can be reduced to within the estimation or measurement accuracy of the value α.

The apparatus processes and converts a signal from a stable single-frequency electrical oscillator into a lower or higher frequency electrical signal without using analog multiplier or mixer circuits. An apparatus for synthesizing a fixed phase-stable RF reference signal for use in a radar transceiver includes a phase-stable electrical oscillator which produces a single frequency sinusoidal reference signal. The apparatus converts the reference signal to an arbitrary higher or lower fixed frequency using digital logic and signal delays. The apparatus comprises low-jitter comparator, an impulse former, a gearbox retiming circuit and a recirculator circuit. An apparatus for providing wideband FM modulation of an RF signal includes circuitry for synthesizing a radio frequency signal having arbitrary tuning of center frequency and dynamic command of wideband FM and retaining low phase noise performance of the synthesized signal.
