A dispenser for crushed and cubed ice has a housing arranged forming an article containing chamber from which ice can be dispensed on demand through a discharge opening provided in the housing. A plurality of parallel, coextending screw conveyors are disposed within the chamber and disposed adjacent a floor thereof selectively moving ice toward the discharge opening of the housing without excavating the ice beneath the conveyors, with a baffle being disposed extending from adjacent the discharge opening for preventing bridging of ice within the chamber of the dispenser by causing part of the ice moved by the conveyors toward the discharge opening to orbit about the chamber. Operation of the conveyors can be controlled by a coin-actuated mechanism, and the like, in conjunction with a weighing scale on which the ice receiving receptacle can be disposed, and a suitable electrical circuit including a timer causing interruption of the circuit after a predetermined length of time in the event the weighing scale is lifted upwardly or is otherwise prevented from a normal downward movement as ice is being dispensed.

A dispenser for storing and dispensing ice cubes in a dispensed condition substantially free of ice chips. An electric motor driven gear train is mounted in the bottom of the ice dispenser storage bin and terminates in an output pinion which engages with a shaft mounted rotor member. The rotor member rotates about a vertical axis and includes an upper spider like section having a plurality of circumferentially spaced radially extending arms which function to maintain the stored ice cubes in a loose condition. The rotor includes a flanged rotor section adjacent the bottom of the storage bin having a plurality of radially extending rib members on its top surface. A dispensing chute is tangentially aligned with respect to the rib portion of the lower rotor section and also the hub surface of the rotor and functions to channel the loosened ice cubes therethrough. The dispenser further includes an inclined agitator member having one end thereof pivotally mounted near the upper end of the storage bin with its lower end engaging either, as disclosed in a first embodiment, a cam for transferring reciprocal motion thereto, or as disclosed in a second embodiment, one end of the reciprocating pivotally mounted lever driven by a cam member mounted on the rotor. The agitating member and the bottom of the storage bin are inclined downwardly toward the rotor member while openings in the bottom surface of the storage bin immediately under the rotor member permit the ice chips to fall therethrough.

The invention provides an apparatus and method for continuously delivering ice particulates at high velocity onto a substrate for treating the surface of the substrate. The apparatus includes a refrigerated curved surface that is brought into contact with water to form a thin, substantially uniform, ice sheet on the surface. This ice sheet is of such thickness as to contain stresses so that the sheet is predisposed to fracture into particulates. A doctor-knife is mounted to intercept a leading edge of the ice sheet and to fragment the ice sheet to produce ice particulates. These ice particulates enter into at least one ice-receiving tube that extends substantially along the length of the doctor-knife. Once in the tube, the ice particulates are fluidized by a constant flow of air and are carried into a hose for delivery through an ice-blasting nozzle under pressure. The flow path for the ice particulates in the tube and the delivery hose has a substantially constant cross-sectional area, and flow surfaces are smooth to minimize the likelihood of blockages. Advantageously, the apparatus is able to function for extended periods of time without ice blockages occurring.
