The mercury-vapor pressure within a fluorescent lamp is controlled by an amalgam-forming metal that combines with mercury and is enclosed in a foraminous container disposed at a selected location within the lamp envelope. The vapor-pressure control assembly is fabricated from two strips of wire mesh that are pressed into overlying sandwiched relationship with a strip of amalgam-forming metal by passing the strips between a pair of rollers. Leakage of the amalgam-forming metal (and amalgam) when in a fluid state is prevented by providing a border of overlapped wire mesh that is devoid of metal and extends around the periphery of the assembly. Mass production on a continuous basis is achieved by using two sets of paired rollers, one set of which includes cutting means that severs the strip of amalgam metal and permits segments of the metal to be removed before the second wire mesh strip is pressed into place. The composite mesh-amalgam strip is then severed along the resulting gaps between the enclosed lengths of amalgam metal.

A method of dosing an incandescent lamp with predetermined amounts of halogen and inert fill gas. The lamp and an interconnecting chamber are evacuated. A common chamber contains a mixture of halogen and inert gas at predetermined partial pressures. The halogen and fill gas are simultaneously transported from the common chamber to the lamp and interconnecting chamber to establish predetermined partial pressures of halogen and inert gas in the lamp and interconnecting chamber. The lamp is then cooled below the condensation point of the halogen to condense the halogen in the lamp, and the cooling of the lamp also causes an increased amount of the fill gas to be dosed into the lamp. The lamp is then sealed off from the interconnecting chamber.

A high-pressure gas-filling apparatus and method for filling gas containers such as lamps to a positive pressure of several atmospheres to minimize waste of supply gas. Empty lamp bodies are attached to a filling manifold and the filling apparatus is evacuated to a desired pressure range before filling occurs. After the lamps have been filled and sealed, control valves are closed to trap unused supply gas in the system. The trapped gas is then liquified and collected in a freezeout chamber by applying cooling to the freezeout chamber. When cooling is discontinued, the liquified gas in the chamber revaporizes and when sufficient pressure builds up, the gas reenters the highpressure supply side of the apparatus for reuse. Through the use of the freezeout chamber one of the supply containers can be purged, when its pressure will not operate a regulator, and the residual gas therein be placed into the other supply container.
