Abstract:
A magnetron includes an evacuated envelope having therein a cathode assembly. An anode electrode surrounds the cathode assembly. The cathode assembly is formed of a helically wound filament having a quadrilateral cross-section. One of the surfaces of the quadrilateral cross-section filament is wider than the others. The wider surface of the filament faces the anode electrode. The quadrilateral cross-section thereby increasing the sag resistance of the filament.
Abstract:
An incandescent lamp having a coating thereon which returns infrared energy to the filament to decrease the amount of power consumed by the lamp in order to maintain the filament at a predetermined operating temperature has a predetermined fractional spacing between turns which results in an emissivity greater than 0.5 at 2,000.degree. K. The filament also has a predetermined length to diameter ratio to make it compact and thereby improve its emissivity and the capture of the reflected infrared radiation and to reduce aberration losses. The filament can be a coiled coil or triple coiled coil and can be stabilized by secondary recrystallization.
Abstract:
In a reticulated grid cathode which has a flexible connection at one end to the conductor for the filament current present inside the cathode, the flexible connection consists of a number of thin metal strips of the same thickness. The strips constitute an approximately semi-circular arc and each consist of two strips of preferably the same thickness. In order to minimize the bending stress occurring in the strips, the diameter of the arc formed by the strips is chosen to be as large as possible relative to the radial dimensions of the cathode.
Abstract:
In a direct-heated cathode electrode for use in electron guns wherein a heating element is mounted on a base to heat a cathode pellet which emits thermoions, a cathode shield maintained at the same potential as the heating element is disposed between the same and the base.
Abstract:
A thermionic cathode comprising a lanthanum hexaboride (LaB6) emitter and an emission current-intercepting plate made of rhenium containing an aperture disposed adjacent the emitter. The separation between the emitter and plate is set as small as possible without physical contact between them, typically 0.1 mm. The beam emitted through the aperture has high brightness and low energy spread. To prevent corrosion of the emitter it is housed in a cavity which is exposed to the vacuum of the apparatus only through the aperture.
