    摘要: In a spark plug in use for an internal combustion engine, a ground electrode is secured to a front end of the metal shell so that a front end surface of the ground electrode faces an elevational side of a front end of the center electrode to cause semi-creeping spark discharges therebetween along a front end surface of the insulator. A front end portion of the center electrode has an electrode base in the axial bore and an electrode front defined diametrically smaller than the electrode base by way of a diameter-variable portion. A diametrical difference between an initial point of the diameter-variable portion of the center electrode and the axial bore of the insulator is 1 mm or less, and the initial point of the diameter-variable portion is retracted by 0.0 mm-1.0 mm from the front end surface of the insulator.

    摘要: A spark plug in use for an internal combustion engine, includes an insulator placed in a metal shell in a manner to extend its front end beyond the metal shell, a center electrode is placed within an axial bore provided by the insulator, an outer electrode which is welded to a front end of the metal shell is so bent that a firing end of the outer electrode faces a front end of the insulator with a space therebetween to cause surface-spark discharges along a front end surface of the insulator and to cause a semi-surface spark discharge between the center electrode and the outer electrode, the front end of the center electrode is protroacted from a front end of the insulator by at most than 0.5 mm or retracted from the front end of the insulator by at most than 1.0 mm, and the firing end of the outer electrode is in line with the front end surface of the insulator, thereby optimizing a carbon-deposit cleaning performance of the spark plug with the semi-surface spark discharge, according to the invention. In addition, a firing end portion of the center electrode has a slender noble metal tip in a preferred embodiment of the spark plugs of the invention.

A plurality of lock arms are provided with a front end of the metallic shell, and each top end of lock arms has a pawl which is brought into an engagement with an inner wall of a groove which is provided with an inner surface of the ground electrode when the metallic shell and the ground electrode are connected, and at the same time, the insulator is brought into an engagement with an inner side of each lock arm to deter the lock arms from being flexed inwardly when the insulator is placed.

    摘要: A surface-discharge igniter having concentric electrodes includes a gap at its operative tip which separates one of the electrodes from the exposed semiconductive surface of a semiconductive pellet that is interposed concentrically with the two electrodes. The said one electrode, which may be either the inner or outer electrode, is connected electrically to the pellet at the bottom of the gap away from the operative tip, whereas the other electrode makes contact with the pellet at, and in the region of, the exposed surface but is otherwise insulated electrically from it. Where the gap separates the inner electrode from the semiconductive surface then the outer electrode may be flared inwardly to establish its electrical connection with that surface. On the other hand, where the gap separates the outer electrode from the semiconductive surface the inner electrode may be flared outwardly, or provided with a cap that extends outwardly across the surface, to establish the connection with it. Holes for draining the gap may be provided through the outer electrode, and the pellet, which may be of material including silicon-carbide particles, may be brazed to the electrodes.
