Abstract: A hydrogen direct injection engine includes a cylinder and a combustion chamber positioned at a center of the cylinder, where an axis of the combustion chamber is approximately identical to an axis of the cylinder. The hydrogen direct injection engine also includes one or more intake valves positioned around the cylinder, one or more exhaust valves positioned around the cylinder, a cylinder head mounted across a top surface of the cylinder, and a fuel injector positioned vertically at the center of the cylinder. The hydrogen direct injection engine further includes a piston disposed within the cylinder, and a spark plug positioned between the one or more intake valves.

Abstract: A controller for an internal combustion engine is configured to execute: a pressure calculation process that calculates pressure of gas in a crank chamber based on a running state of the internal combustion engine; a first injection process that causes a water injection valve to inject a first injection amount of water when an intake valve is open; and a second injection process that causes the water injection valve to inject a second injection amount of water when the intake valve is closed. The controller is further configured to set a ratio of the first injection amount to a sum of the first injection amount and the second injection amount to a smaller value when the pressure is greater than or equal to a specified value than when the pressure is less than the specified value.

Abstract: An engine includes: a piston including a cavity; a cylinder head configured to form a combustion chamber having a pent roof shape; a fuel injection valve configured to inject fuel from a second half of a compression stroke until a first half of an expansion stroke; and a spark plug arranged at a position corresponding to an upper side of the cavity. Injection openings are arranged in a circumferential direction surrounding a longitudinal axis of the valve. The combustion chamber at a compression top dead center is divided into a plurality of fuel injection regions, located in respective injection directions of the injection openings, by vertical surfaces extending radially from the longitudinal axis through a middle between adjacent injection openings. When a volume of the fuel injection region located in the injection direction of the injection opening is large, an opening area of the injection opening is large.

In one example, a method may include differentiating spark plug fouling due to soot accumulation from spark plug fouling due to fuel additive accumulation based on a current on a control wire of the spark plug following application of a dwell command. Further, exhaust oxygen sensor degradation and/or exhaust catalyst degradation may be determined based on switching frequencies of one or more exhaust oxygen sensors and the type of spark plug fouling.

Abstract: The present invention describes a fuel-management system for minimizing particulate emissions in turbocharged direct injection gasoline engines. The system optimizes the use of port fuel injection (PFI) in combination with direct injection (DI), particularly in cold start and other transient conditions. In the present invention, the use of these control systems together with other control systems for increasing the effectiveness of port fuel injector use and for reducing particulate emissions from turbocharged direct injection engines is described. Particular attention is given to reducing particulate emissions that occur during cold start and transient conditions since a substantial fraction of the particulate emissions during a drive cycle occur at these times. Further optimization of the fuel management system for these conditions is important for reducing drive cycle emissions.

A control device of an engine is an engine control device for controlling the behavior of fuel that is directly injected into a combustion chamber of a cylinder by a tumble flow, and it has an injector that directly injects the fuel into the combustion chamber, an intake port that generates the tumble flow in the combustion chamber, and an ECU that injects the fuel from the injector at a plurality of injection timings including an intake-stroke-early-half injection timing that is set at an early half of the intake stroke of the cylinder, when an operating state of the engine is in a high-load, low-rotation range.
