A fluid film damper mechanism acts between the annular outer surface and the outer wall of the cavity for damping radial movement of the bearing member within the cavity. A resiliently adjustable dead weight hanging spring support system acts between the housing and the bearing member to support the dead weight of the shaft within a vertically centered position within the central bore so that the fluid film damper means functions to maintain the shaft centered within the bore when vibrations occur during rotation of the shaft.

The shaft's bearing runner is forced in a direction away from its associated thrust bearing during initial start-up procedures by a suitable means for imparting a force on the bearing runner in a direction away from the thrust bearing. The force is provided by a piston and cylinder combination, in the preferred embodiment, which provides an axial force in a direction opposing the initial shaft loading force. An anti-friction guide bearing is used to transfer this force from the piston to the shaft and, in turn, to the bearing runner.

The second section is stamped to produce an annular pattern of raised projections formed by bending the material along slits to form radially extending bumps which resiliently support the first section. The two sheets are superimposed and aligned, and are welded together along the edge by which the sector-shaped flaps are attached to the first section. The welded assemblies are then sheared from the superimposed foils and deburred.

The bearing has a bearing box with arcuate edges adapted to the bearing surface of the drum, with a fluid inlet opening inside the edges. In grooves in the edges, sealing strips are movably laid in such a manner that the strips are pressed by the fluid pressure in the bearing box against the bearing surface of the drum when the drum is lifted by the fluid pressure.
