An apparatus and method are disclosed for achieving receiver diversity. A wireless unit includes a plurality of antennas, an antenna selector to select one or more antennas from the plurality of antennas, a processor with input data from an inertial sensor for monitoring the orientation of the wireless unit. Based on the input data, the processor commands the antenna selector to select one or more antennas. In some embodiments, the processor is a diversity processor. Based on the input data from the inertial sensor, the diversity processor computes the combination of the received signals. In another aspect, the wireless unit further includes a baseband processor to process the output of the diversity processor for a particular unit application.

A communication repeater for use in conjunction with a base transceiver subsystem (BTS) of a wireless communication system. The repeater expands the coverage area of the BTS and allows receivers to identify whether the source of a communication signal was directly from a BTS or was broadcast by a repeater. Identification of the signal source facilitates position determination, particularly in hybrid position determination systems. The repeater implements differential delay modulation of the transmitted signal. The repeater re-transmits the original BTS signal as well as a time delayed version of the signal. Additionally, the repeater introduces synthetic path diversity in the form of spatial diversity or polarity diversity to de-correlate the re-transmitted original signal from the time delayed signal. The repeater can broadcast the delayed signal with the same power as the re-transmitted original signal or can attenuate the delayed signal relative to the re-transmitted original signal.

Each correlator typically receives and despreads input samples (which are generated from the received signal) with a respective despreading sequence to provide despread samples. Each correlator then decovers the despread samples to provide decovered “half-symbols” and further demodulates the decovered half-symbols with pilot estimates to generate correlated symbols. The decovering is performed with a Walsh symbol having a length (T) that is half the length (2T) of a Walsh symbol used to cover the data symbols in the transmitted signal. The combiner selectively combines correlated symbols from the assigned correlators to provide demodulated symbols. One or more correlators can be assigned to process one or more instances of each transmitted signal. The pilot estimates used within each assigned correlator to demodulate the decovered half-symbols are generated based on the signal instance being processed by that correlator.

A method of wireless communications according to one embodiment of the invention includes obtaining a first time base (e.g. obtaining a code phase) from a signal received from a ground transmitter (e.g. a CDMA base station). A predetermined offset based on at least a propagation delay of the received signal is applied to the first time base to obtain a second time base. For example, the second time base may be aligned to a time base of a positioning satellite system (e.g. the NAVSTAR GPS). A timing signal is generated that has a code phase based on the second time base.

The present invention is a novel and improved method and apparatus for performing frame identification. In accordance with one embodiment of the invention, a received frame of data is processed by generating estimates of the received frame, measuring a correlation between said estimates and stored estimates of a previously improperly received frame, processing the received frame as a retransmitted frame when said correlation is greater than a first threshold, processing the received frame as a new frame when said correlation is less than a second threshold, wherein said second threshold is less than or equal to said first threshold.
