Abstract:
A method for facilitating input/output (I/O) communication for a processing operation is provided. An interrogate command is obtained by an I/O communications adapter. The interrogate command queries for status information of the processing operation to be provided in an interrogate response. A fixed number of resources and a time allocated to the interrogate command is throttled by pre-allocating the fixed number of resources needed for the interrogate command, and maintaining a timestamp for a interrogate message. The interrogate message is forwarded from the I/O communications adapter to a control unit. If the interrogate response is not received by the I/O communications adapter within a limited timeout period as measured by the timestamp, or if the interrogate message is received while the fixed number of pre-allocated resources are in use, the I/O communications adapter returns a busy response indicating the control unit is busy to prevent overrunning the control unit.
Abstract:
A method of packaging a plurality of repeating commands for device command word (DCW) processing in a computer environment having an I/O link handling complex instruction chains for a processing operation is provided. Locate record information is packaged into DCW prefix parameter data. The locate record information includes an intent count argument. The plurality of repeating commands are embedded as a truncated concatenation to the first locate record information. The plurality of repeating commands are identified by redefining the intent count argument for the plurality of repeating commands as a repeat count argument using a flag argument incorporated into the locate record information. The repeat count argument indicates a number of times for a control unit in the computer environment to execute the plurality of repeating commands.
Abstract:
Provided are techniques for spare device management. Candidate devices are sorted into spare coverage groups by type. One or more candidate devices having closest fitting characteristics of a desired type are identified from the spare coverage groups. The identified one or more candidate devices are assigned to be spare devices for the spare coverage group. It is determined whether a desired number of spare devices have been assigned to the spare coverage group. In response to determining that the desired number of spare devices have not been assigned, a spare device having the closest fitting characteristics for every predetermined number of candidate devices having the closest fitting characteristics is assigned, until the desired number of spare devices having the closest fitting characteristics are assigned.
Abstract:
Provided are a method, system, and article of manufacture, wherein a command is received at a first computational device coupled to a first adapter that is capable of allowing access to a data storage to the first computational device. The first computational device sends the command to a second computational device. The command is processed by a second adapter coupled to the second computational device, wherein the second adapter allows the second computational device to access the data storage, and wherein the second adapter accesses memory in the first computational device to process the command. In certain embodiments, the first adapter that allows the first computational device to access the data storage has failed.
Abstract:
Provided is a method, system, and article of manufacture for providing an address format compatible with different addressing formats used for addressing different sized address spaces. An address format is used in an operating system to address storage space in a storage device comprising a first region and a second region of storage space. A first group of applications uses the address format to only address the storage space in the first region and is not coded to use the address format to access the second region and a second group of applications uses the address format to address the storage space in the first and second regions.
Abstract:
A plurality of storage devices of a plurality of types is provided. A plurality of criteria is associated for each of the plurality of storage devices, based on characteristics of the plurality of storage devices, wherein the plurality of criteria can be used to determine whether a selected storage device is a compatibility spare for a storage device in a storage device array, and whether the selected storage device is an availability spare for the storage device in the storage device array. A determination is made by a spare management application, based on at least the plurality of criteria and at least one optimality condition, of a first set of storage devices selected from the plurality of storage devices to be allocated to a plurality of storage device arrays, and of a second set of storage devices selected from the plurality of storage devices to be allocated as spares for the plurality of storage device arrays. An allocation is made of the first set of storage devices to the plurality of storage device arrays. An allocation made of the second set of storage devices as spares for the plurality of storage device array.
Abstract:
A primary storage control unit receives an information unit from a remote host over a fibre channel connection. The primary storage control unit adjusts an information unit pacing parameter included in a response sent from the primary storage control unit to the remote host, wherein the information unit pacing parameter indicates the number of information units that the remote host is allowed to send to the primary storage control unit without waiting for any additional response from the primary storage control unit.
Abstract:
Provided are a method, system and article of manufacture for verifying a record as part of an operation to modify the record. A search request is received to determine whether a record matches a value. A first component executes the search request to determine if the record matches the value. The first component sends a verify request to a second component that did not execute the search request to execute the search request to determine whether the record matches the value. A result of the first and second components executing the search request is logged.
Abstract:
An apparatus, system, and method are disclosed for fastload code update on a communications adapter. The apparatus includes an image load module, a memory initialization module, and an image overlay module. The image load module is configured to load a copy of a new code image in a memory on the communications adapter. The memory also concurrently stores a copy of an old code image used by the communications adapter. The memory initialization module is configured to invoke the new code image to perform a memory initialization operation. The memory initialization module may perform the memory initialization operation concurrently with ongoing I/O requests possibly accepted, but not necessarily processed, by the old code image. The image overlay module is configured to overlay the old code image with the new code image. The fastload code update minimizes the time that the communications adapter is off-line to overlay the old code image with the new code image and reinitialize the communications adapter.
Abstract:
Provided are a method, system, and program for initiating and using information used for a host, control unit, and logical device connections receiving a request to create a host port to control unit port connection. In a volume group data structure, a volume group entry is defined having a plurality of pointers for the host port and control unit port pair. At least one device address is added to the volume group that is accessible to the host port and control unit port connection by initializing at least one pointer in the volume group entry to address at least one device data structure. For each of the at least one device addresses, indication is made in the at least one device data structure addressed by the at least one pointer in the volume group entry that the device address is accessible to the host port and control unit port connection.
