Abstract: A roller shade comprising a roller tube, a shade material attached to the roller tube, and a shade drive unit adapted to rotate the roller tube to lower or raise the shade material. The shade drive unit comprises a spring adapted to counterbalance the shade drive unit, a spring carrier, and a spring fastener. The spring carrier comprises a cylindrical barrel, wherein one of the first and second ends of the spring is concentrically positioned over the cylindrical barrel of the spring carrier. The spring fastener comprising a body having a curved bottom surface adapted to be positioned over one of the first and second ends of the spring and attached to the cylindrical barrel of the spring carrier.

Abstract: An angle shift compensation system and method for controlling a sinusoidally driven motor to achieve efficient motion and reduced noise. The motor controller uses the angle shift compensation method to monitor the angle shift between a sinusoidal motor control signal configured to drive the motor and a feedback signal received from at least one position detector indicating the position of the motor rotor with respect to the motor stator. In response, the motor controller proportionally adjusts the amplitude of the motor control signal based on the monitored angle shift to maintain the angle shift substantially equal to an angle shift threshold.

Abstract: A motor calibration system and method for a motor having a rotor, a stator, and at least one phase. The system further comprises a controller and a position detector adapted to detect a position of the rotor with respect to the stator. Wherein the controller is adapted to perform a calibration sequence to calibrate to motor by driving at least one motor phase with a motor control signal at a predetermined maximum amplitude value in a first direction with substantially no load applied on the motor, receiving a feedback signal from the at least one position detector, and determining a first calibration angle shift by measuring a difference between at least the motor control signal and the feedback signal of the at least one motor phase. The controller accounts for the first calibration angle shift when driving the motor in the first direction during normal operation.

Abstract: A battery operated shade is provided adapted to adjustably cover a structural opening. The shade generally comprises a shade material extending from a top end to a bottom end and a motor drive unit operably connected to the top end of the shade material and adapted to raise and lower the shade material between an upper limit and a lower limit to adjustably cover and uncover the structural opening. The shade also comprises a shade housing adapted to at least partially conceal the motor drive unit, wherein the shade housing defines a bottom opening at a bottom of the shade housing from which the shade material exits the shade housing. The shade further comprises a battery compartment adapted to removably retain batteries for providing power to the motor drive unit. The battery compartment is attached to the shade housing proximate to the bottom opening below the motor drive unit. The battery compartment is adapted to swivel from a first position where the battery compartment is at least partially concealed by the shade housing, through the bottom opening, and to a second position where the battery compartment is positioned out of the shade housing.

Abstract: A roller shade is disclosed comprising a motor pretensioned counterbalancing spring that lowers the torque load on the motor of the roller shade throughout the rolling up or rolling down cycles. The roller shade comprises a motor drive unit at least partially disposed within a roller tube. The motor drive unit comprises a motor adapted to drive a drive wheel through a clutch. The motor drive unit further comprises a first spring carrier adapted to be stationary during operation of the motor drive unit. The drive wheel is operably connected to the roller tube and comprises a second spring carrier. The motor drive unit further comprises a counterbalancing spring connected at its first end to the first spring carrier and at its second end to the second spring carrier. The counterbalancing spring is pretensioned using the motor prior to inserting the motor drive unit into the roller tube by driving the drive wheel and thereby rotating the second end of the counterbalancing spring with respect to the first end of the counterbalancing spring. The clutch translates rotational motion from the motor to the drive wheel, but locks rotational motion from the drive wheel thereby locking the pretension in the counterbalancing spring.

Abstract: A roller shade is disclosed having a counterbalancing assembly with an optimally pretensioned spring that lowers the torque load on the motor of the roller shade throughout the rolling up or rolling down cycles. The roller shade comprises a roller tube, a gudgeon pin having a first stop, a gudgeon body having a through bore and rotatably connected about the gudgeon pin and operably connected to the roller tube, a limit nut operably connected to the gudgeon body and adapted to axially travel along the gudgeon pin within the through bore, a spring, a first spring carrier connected to the first end of the spring and operably connected to the gudgeon pin, and a second spring carrier connected to the second end of the spring and operably connected to the roller tube. The spring is pretensioned and the limit nut abuts the first stop thereby locking the pretension. Rotation of the roller tube to roll down the shade further tensions the spring, and rotation of the roller tube to roll up the shade releases the tension in the spring.

Abstract: A mechanism for storing a length of cord that includes a first and second pair of pulleys mounted at opposite ends of a frame.
