An apparatus and method for heating an ink jet printhead by using pass transistors to generate heat and warm the substrate of the printhead. The ink jet printhead has a plurality of ink jet printhead nozzle. Each nozzle is controlled by a circuit. The circuit includes a drive transistor that is electrically coupled to a heating resistor, an enable transistor and a plurality of pass transistors. When the circuit receives a control signal having at least a first component and a second component, the first component being input to the gate of at least one pass transistor causing it to be active and generate a first output signal sufficient to activate the drive transistor, and the second component being input to the gate of the enable transistor causing the enable transistor to be active, a first current passes the heating resistor sufficient to cause a nozzle to fire, and a second current flows through both the at least one pass transistor and the enable transistor sufficient to generate heat and warm the substrate.

A heater chip module is provided comprising a rigid carrier, a nozzle plate and a heater chip. The carrier is adapted to be secured to a container for receiving ink. The carrier includes an opening extending completely through the carrier. The opening has an outer periphery. A nozzle plate is coupled to the carrier and extends out beyond the outer periphery of the opening so as to substantially cover the opening. A heater chip is positioned within the opening and is coupled directly to the nozzle plate. The heater chip is coupled to the carrier only by way of the nozzle plate. Thus, the heater chip does not directly contact the carrier.

An ink jet printing apparatus is provided comprising a print cartridge including a heater chip and a nozzle plate coupled to the heater chip. The heater chip has first, second, third and fourth heating elements, and the nozzle plate has a plurality of primary and secondary nozzles. The primary nozzles include first and second nozzles positioned in first and second nozzle plate columns and the secondary nozzles include third and fourth nozzles positioned in third and fourth nozzle plate columns. Each of the nozzles has one of the heating elements associated therewith for generating energy to discharge ink therefrom. The apparatus further includes a driver circuit, electrically coupled to the print cartridge, for applying firing pulses to the heating elements. The apparatus further includes a nozzle testing station. There, each nozzle is tested to determine if it is operable.

An increased resolution thermal ink jet printhead construction and method for forming large array heater chips for thermal ink jet printheads is achieved by fabricating a unitary "megachip" in which multiple cells of electrical components are defined in a plurality of columnar patterns in a plane of a silicon wafer. Cells of a first column are vertically offset from cells of an adjacent column so as to overlap the gap between cells in the first column. The megachip is then formed by grouping at least one cell from each of two adjacent columns and dicing the wafer to remove the megachip.
