摘要:
Cross-service connectivity between use of the telephone network and use of an e-mail data network is provided by enabling a recipient of an e-mail message to receive e-mail messages through an alias e-mail address which is directly associated with the recipient's telephone number. Thus, the alias e-mail address consists of the recipient's telephone number as the recipient name at a well-known and publicized common domain name server. A sender therefore addresses an e-mail message to the recipient to that alias e-mail address using the recipient's alias telephone number name. A message addressed to the alias e-mail address is sent to a translation server at that known domain name, where the alias telephone number-recipient name is translated to the actual e-mail address comprising the recipient's actual name and associated domain name server, and the message is then forwarded to that recipient at that actual e-mail address. Such aliasing capabilities are effected through a registration process in which the recipient registers for such a service and provides to the translation server his or her actual e-mail address and associated telephone number to which senders of messages to that recipient can use to address e-mail messages.

A method and system for consolidating multiple mailboxes into a single universal mailbox. The system comprises an agent, a user database, an application database and a mail repository. The agent searches a user database to determine the list of messaging systems the user subscribes to. The agent then recalls from the application database the procedures for accessing the messaging systems and logs onto each messaging system in turn to retrieve any new messages. The agent notifies the user of new messages according to a predefined notification method.

A method and apparatus determine a caller's eligibility to enter a lottery, determine whether the caller has won the lottery and advise the caller of the winning status in response to a caller's request for communication services. The odds of winning a lottery for the caller can be adjusted based on the caller's participation history, such as a past number of calls made or total call time logged by the caller. Thus, frequent users of a communication service can be rewarded with increased odds of winning a lottery each time a request for communication services is made and communication services are provided.

Entities who normally are financially responsible for calls made by them have their calls paid for by a sponsor when they are selected by the sponsor to be included in a "family ring" and they make calls to other entities that are included by the sponsor in the family ring. This capability is achieved with the aid of a database node which maintains information about the identity of members in the family ring. Operationally, in accordance with one embodiment, any member of the family ring who wishes to call another member of the family ring calls a pre-designated number that connects the calling party to a database node. The database node interacts with the calling party by first determining whether the calling party is a member of the family ring, and when the calling party is authenticated, the database node responds to information that identifies a selected called party who is also a member of the family ring. The database node performs a translation, as necessary, and informs the telecommunication network of the destination desired by the calling party. In response, the telecommunication network connects the calling party to the called party.

A cable access network includes a cable trunk amplifier connected over a coaxial cable to A plurality of cable data modems to provide backup power to the cable modem during power outages experienced by either the trunk amplifier or the modems, thereby insuring uninterruptible IP telephone service. The trunk amplifier applies a DC voltage across the conductors of the coaxial cable. An AC/DC power converter and regulator and also a backup battery are sources of power for the DC voltage applied to the coaxial cable. A power outage sensor selectively connects either the AC/DC power converter and regulator or, alternately, the backup battery to the cable, depending on whether there is an outage sensed at the trunk amplifier. Each cable data modem connected to the trunk amplifier is partitioned into IP voice circuits and other circuits not contributing to the IP voice function. The other circuits include, for example, video/audio receiver circuits and IP data transceiver circuits. The IP voice circuits are connected to the subscriber's telephone hand set. The cable data modem applies a DC voltage to the IP voice circuits and the subscriber's telephone hand set. An AC/DC power converter and regulator in the modem and also the DC voltage from the coaxial cable are sources of power for the DC voltage applied to the IP voice circuits. A power outage sensor selectively connects the IP voice circuits to either the AC/DC power converter and regulator in the modem or, alternately, the DC voltage from the coaxial cable, depending on whether there is an outage sensed at the cable data modem. The other circuits such as the video/audio receiver circuits and IP data transceiver circuits are powered only by the AC/DC power converter and regulator in the cable data modem. In this manner, if there is a general power outage affecting both the trunk amplifier and many of the cable data modems connected to it, the power to be supplied by the backup battery at the trunk amplifier is only required to power the IP voice circuits and the subscriber's telephone hand set.
