摘要： An image forming apparatus includes an image bearer, an image forming device to form a toner image on the image bearer, a transfer device to transfer the toner image to a recording medium, a line sensor as an image density sensor to detect image density of the toner image, and a controller operatively connected to the image density sensor. The image density sensor is disposed so as to be shorter in a rotational direction of the image bearer than in a width direction of the image bearer perpendicular to the rotational direction of the image bearer. The controller forms a shading pattern image including a plurality of patches on the image bearer, and detects image density of the plurality of patches, so as to control image density. The shading pattern image is shorter in the rotational direction of the image bearer than in the width direction of the image bearer.

摘要： An image forming apparatus includes an image carrier configured to carry an image and a charger to which a direct current voltage overlapped with an AC voltage is applied as a charging bias to charge the image carrier. The charger is positioned in contact or contactlessly with the image carrier. A controller performs an adjustment to the AC voltage multiple times to gradually bring the AC voltage to a target value.

A charging roller has a circular cross section with a first radius, the charging roller including a metallic core having a same rotational axis as the charging roller and a charging surface configured to charge the photoconductive surface of the image bearing member. A pair of gap forming members is disposed on longitudinal ends of the charging surface of the charging roller and is configured to contact longitudinal ends of the image bearing member to form a gap at least between the image forming area of the photoconductive surface of the image bearing member and the charging surface of the charging roller, each of the gap forming members having a circular cross section with a second radius such that a ratio of the second radius to the first radius is substantially constant through an entire rotational phase of the charging roller.
