摘要： Featured for use in the reaction canister of an inflatable restraint system is a continuous circumference diffuser tube. The diffuser tube may be a one-piece, two-piece or clamshell type all of which functionally are the same although the clamshell type is more versatile. The diffuser tube provides for the attachment of brackets for installation of the reaction canister in the instrument panel of a vehicle, provides a secure reliable attachment for the inflatable bag or protective cushion, and a secure installation of the inflator. The diffuser tube completely encloses the inflator and allows a last operation of assembly thereof.

摘要： A water soluble dicarboxylic acid acts as a mold release agent for salt blocks when it is sprayed as a fine powder into the block press mold box just prior to a charge of salt. The acid has from 6 to 10 carbon atoms; adipic acid is a preferred release agent. The salt block having a layer of the acid on it surface may be used in water softening systems wherein the block sits in a brine reservoir and supplies salt for the recharging of an ion exchange resin. There is no build up of an unsightly scum on the surface of the brine and on the sides of the reservoir as there has been with the use of calcium stearate as the release agent.

摘要： An air bag inflator for inflating an air bag includes a housing for generating gas having only two walled chambers, including a centrally disposed ignition chamber and an outer chamber in coaxial relation therewith. The outer chamber provides a dual function of containing a quantity of gas generating material in an inner portion thereof and holding a filter for cooling and collecting contaminants from the generated gas in an outer portion thereof. The filter is mounted with an inlet face of substantial area in direct contact with and surrounding a body of gas generating material and no wall is provided between the filter and the generating material.

摘要： A tethered cover airbag system is provided for motor vehicles and the like having a panel formed with an opening in the vicinity of an occupant's seat and including an inflatable airbag mounted in a housing or canister for containing the bag in a deflated condition. The housing has an open end aligned with a panel opening to permit the airbag to pass outwardly when deployed for cushioning support for an occupant in the adjacent seat. A cover is provided for normally closing the panel opening to protect the airbag and is bodily movable to uncover the opening during airbag deployment. A flexible tether is interconnected between the cover and the panel edge or the housing for limiting the movement of the cover away from the panel during deployment. A suitable attachment system is provided for spreading the load exerted by the tether over a large area of the cover for reducing stress exerted on the cover during airbag deployment. The tether thus restrains the cover from moving around the passenger compartment of the vehicle in an uncontrolled manner during an airbag deployment and by reducing the load or stress exerted on the cover by the tether, the chance of break-up or fracturing of the cover into pieces is minimized.

摘要： An air bag inflator for generating gas to rapidly inflate an air bag includes a housing having spaced-apart opposite end walls with aligned outer peripheral edges, an outer side wall extending between the end walls around the peripheral edges defining an outer chamber for containing gas-generating material and a filter element. The housing also includes an inner side wall extending between the end walls in concentric, centered relation for containing an ignition squib and ignition-enhancing material and provided with ignition ports in communication with the other combustion chamber. The outer side wall is provided with a plurality of ports directing hot products of combustion outwardly to inflate an associated air bag. At least one pair of concentric crimp-formed joints are provided to interconnect the side walls and at least one of the end walls, top or bottom.

摘要： Slurry and spray dried azide-based gas generant intermediates are made having a hydrazoic acid content of less than about 3.times.10 EXP(-3) M/L, a pH of greater than 8.0 up to about 12.5, and impurity metal ions Ca, Mg, Pb, Fe, Mn and Cu, each below about 25 ppm. These intermediates are made by slurrying powdered ingredients of the azide and oxidizer/reactant in water, wet grinding the slurry and spray drying to form a particulate material which is molded into pellets or tablets which are useful as the gas generant in vehicle crash bags or inflators. The basicity of the water is adjusted to a pH of greater than 8.0 up to about 12.5, preferably about 10, by the addition of a base, such as NaOH, followed by the addition of such solid ingredients as S, MoS.sub.2 and NaN.sub.3, and preferably the NaN.sub.3 is added last, whereby hydrazoic acid production is minimized. The contaminant Ca and Mg ions are minimized by softening the water supplied. Impurity ions are also minimized by being precipitated as non-hazardous compounds by adding such agents as sodium sulfide and tri-sodium phosphate to the slurry. Impurities in the MoS.sub.2 feed may be further minimized by chemical leaching purification.

摘要： A single device acts as a pressure switch, gas generated heater, and an igniter. The device has pyrotechnic material such as a combustible gas in an inner chamber. An outer chamber, that is, a chamber in which the device is positioned, includes a gas that may or may not be combustible. A monitor current flows through a pressure monitor resistor and a bridgewire resistor monitoring continuity. When the pressure in the outer chamber decreases below a threshold value, the pressure monitor resistor breaks continuity and causes a resistance change. If an air bag is to deploy, the bridgewire resistor heats up to a point that the pyrotechnic material in the inner chamber is ignited. The resulting combustion ruptures pressure discs and the outward hot product heats the gas in the outer chamber. The outer chamber ruptures and the heated gas therein flows in the air bag.
