In order to conduct an electrostatic flocking operation of the workpiece by having the workpiece traveled at high speed between the inlet opening and the outlet opening, a pair of electrodes are disposed parallel to a passage of the electrostatic flocking chamber, which passage is increased in length to permit the workpiece to pass through the passage at high speed. A high voltage is applied to a first one of the electrodes, while a low voltage lower than the high voltage is applied to a second one of the electrodes, wherein the first and the second electrode are disposed in the inlet opening's side and the outlet opening's side, respectively.

A method and apparatus for applying flock to a substrate, such as a garment, comprising a compact, portable, self-contained flocking machine in which the cabinet and flocking trays are non-metallic and are preferably wood and plastic, respectively, whereby the electric field from an electrode in the flocking tray to the metallic garment holding platen causes the flock to move in a straight, uniform, dense pattern from the flock tray to the garment. In addition, the high voltage electrode in the flock tray is not energized until the flock tray has moved up and made contact with the garment holding platen to prevent flock from coming up out of the tray while the tray is moving up and down and to prevent any risk of shock to the operator. The platen is mounted on a rotatable shaft and diametrically opposed to a similar platen in an uppermost position which is operatively associated with a screen printer. In use, a printed substrate is flocked while an additional substrate is being printed.

Objects moving through a coating chamber are coated with particles, flakes or fibres in a uniform manner as a result of the particles, flakes or fibres being fed to the coating chamber by a conveying system which includes a vibrating feeder box, a gravity duct, a vibrating conveyor channel, a T-shaped distributor body and a transducer located below the distributor body. The transducer includes insulated wires on the bottom leg thereof that convey an alternating current and electrodes which are capable of carrying a direct current to the moving objects to be coated which are themselves grounded. When the particles, flakes or fibres drop from the T-shaped distributor body to the vicinity of the transducer they become influenced by the alternating electrostatic field and rise up in swirls. They then become influenced by the direct electrostatic field between the electrodes and the objects to be coated and they move along the lines of flux to coat the objects uniformly.
