The present invention provides a headstock of a polishing machine, having a simple structure and capable of tracing a pad surface. The headstock of the present invention is formed of a spindle, a holder plate, a spherical bearing, and a plate spring. The holder plate is connected to a lower end portion of the spindle via the spherical bearing and the plate spring. A workpiece is attached to the lower surface of the holder plate. The spherical bearing has a center of tilting movement on a rotation axis of the spindle. The holder plate has a balance plate. The center of gravity of the holder plate including the balance plate coincides with the center of tilting movement of the spherical bearing. The plate spring has an axisymmetric shape. More specifically, the plate spring has an opening portion at the center and a plurality of arm portions extending to the outer periphery in the diameter direction. The plate spring is connected to the lower end of the spindle by use of first fitting holes which are formed along the inner periphery, and the plate spring is also attached to the holder plate by use of second fitting holes which are formed in the distal end of the plate spring. The first and second fitting holes are respectively located on small- and large-diameter circles which are concentrically arranged around the rotation axis of the spindle.

A computerized control system and method is disclosed for controlling a temperature differential balancer associated with a rotating device. The control system utilizes a microprocessor under stored program control which automatically recalibrates the phase angle difference between a vibration signal and a position signal of said rotating device. This difference is then used to define a corrected chamber to be heated or cooled in order to effect the desired device balance.

An improved unbalance compensator control in which the distribution of balance mass fluid is controlled by selective activation of thermal devices creating thermal differentials and ensuing balance mass fluid re-distribution for balance correction, and in which electrical power for the thermal devices is transmitted across an air gap separating stationary and rotating portions by means of the selective energizing of primary coils each of which has a corresponding confronting secondary coil associated therewith. Different geometries of coils are disclosed. In another embodiment a composite waveform containing power and signal components is conducted to the rotating portion by electro-mechanical contact arrangements at opposite axial ends of the machine on which the unbalance compensator is mounted.

A device for balancing rotating bodies such as grinding wheels, by causing the center of gravity of a counterweight to move along a predetermined path relative to the body while the latter is rotating. The path followed by the center of gravity of the counterweight is such that it is caused to continually and repeatedly increase and decrease its radial distance from the axis of rotation as it progresses angularly around the axis. Preferably, provision is made for reversing its direction of movement along the path so that balance may be approached by the shortest route.
