摘要: A liquid crystal device of the type including a pair of substrates having thereon a group of scanning electrodes and a group of data electrodes, and a chiral smectic liquid crystal disposed between the substrates so as to form a pixel at each intersection of the scanning electrodes and the data electrodes, is driven by a driving method causing less crosstalk. The driving method includes the steps of sequentially applying a scanning selection signal to the scanning electrodes, and applying data signals to the data electrodes in synchronism with the scanning selection signal. The scanning selection signal includes a writing pulse having a pulse width .DELTA.T for determining an optical state of the chiral smectic liquid crystal in cooperation with a data signal. Each data signal includes a data pulse for determining an optical state of the chiral smectic liquid crystal in cooperation with the writing pulse. A plurality of data signals are each designed to have a waveform determined based on a combination of data applied to pixels on at least two consecutively selected scanning electrodes. At least one of said plurality of data signals include an auxiliary pulse having a pulse width shorter than .DELTA.T.

摘要: Burning and flickering effects of a display screen in a matrix-type liquid crystal display device using an anti-ferroelectric liquid crystal medium are avoided by controlling the duration of the holding period to a certain length. A control circuit measures the cycle of the input of the picture signals to one picture frame, and the duration of the blanking period is controlled according to the result of the measurement in order to keep the duration of the holding period constant.

摘要: A liquid crystal apparatus is constituted by a liquid crystal device including a pair of substrates and a liquid crystal disposed between the substrates, and means for applying an asymmetrical drive signal waveform to the liquid crystal. The liquid crystal is capable of having at least two stable states S1 and S2 and capable of causing a cumulative translational movement depending on a change in an external electric field applied to the liquid crystal. To the liquid crystal, an asymmetrical drive signal waveform having an effective frequency range is applied by the above application means so as to provide an absolute value of a difference between an inversion frequency f.sub.01 where a direction of the movement of said liquid crystal is turned in an opposite direction in the state S1 and an inversion frequency f.sub.02 where a direction of the movement of said liquid crystal is turned in an opposite direction in the state S2 smaller than a difference therebetween in the case of applying a symmetrical drive signal waveform to said liquid crystal. The inversion frequencies f.sub.01 and f.sub.02 are within the effective frequency range of the asymmetrical drive signal waveform. The application means is effective in suppressing liquid crystal movement in the liquid crystal device.

摘要: The present invention provides a liquid crystal display device having a matrix electrode structure in which flicker of picture images displayed on a panel is invisible. Scanning electrodes of the matrix are driven by alternating voltages which include voltages for holding picture images displayed on the panel. Refresh pulse voltages higher than the holding voltages are imposed on the scanning electrodes every time the polarity of the holding voltages is reversed, so that the brightness of the picture images does not change before and after the reversing of the holding voltage polarity. In case an anti-ferroelectric liquid crystal is used as the liquid crystal, the refresh pulse voltages which cause transitions of the liquid crystal states between positive ferroelectric and negative ferroelectric states and do not cause the transition from an anti-ferroelectric state to the ferroelectric states are imposed on the scanning electrodes.

摘要: A time-sharing addressing method for an antiferroelectric phase liquid crystal element that demonstrates tristable switching behavior, wherein the drive voltage waveform is made an alternating current and the time average value of the voltage, including the depolarization field due to spontaneous polarization of the liquid crystal, actually applied to the liquid crystal substance in one frame or two frames is made zero for the purpose of expanding the drive voltage margin and the operating temperature margin of the element, shortening the screen scanning time and preventing degradation of the electro-optical characteristic by suppressing polarization of the electric charge due to spontaneous polarization of the liquid crystal. Also, by providing the blanking period required for relaxation from a ferroelectric phase to an antiferroelectric phase in the non-selection period, the time required for screen scanning is shortened, and by changing the length of the blanking period according to the temperature dependence of the response-relaxation time, the operating temperature margin is expanded.
