A device for displaying a stereoscopic image in which cross-talk is suppressed. A left eye image and a right eye image alternately displayed on a liquid crystal display panel are viewed through an eye shutter having a left eye and a right eye shutter which are alternately switched. The image is displayed on the panel by sequentially supplying scanning voltages on a scanning electrode array and supplying image data voltages on a data electrode array in synchronism with the scanning voltages. The display panel is divided into an upper part and a lower part which are scanned separately in opposite directions. The left eye image is displayed in the first field during which all scanning electrodes in both parts are scanned, and the right eye image is similarly displayed in the second field following the first field. A certain time interval is provided between the first and second fields, while properly setting the eye shutter switching timing. Thus, cross-talk images are displayed only in limited regions close to upper and lower edges of the display panel. The display panel may be scanned in a single scanning method, and the displayed image may be held with a lower brightness to suppress the cross-talk images.

The waveforms of voltages applied to the display in the two scan periods are symmetrical to each other with respect to 0 V. Each of the scan periods consists of a selected period and an unselected period. The waveform of a voltage applied in the selected period is modulated to control the response time of the antiferroelectric liquid crystal material and adjust the light transmittance thereof in the following unselected period.

An antiferroelectric liquid crystal display apparatus free from burn-in and achieving high display quality is provided by providing means for preventing pixel brightness from varying between pixels continuously held in an ON (bright) state and pixels continuously held in an OFF (dark) state. Aging processing is performed to saturate the brightness level of pixels into a stable state and thereby prevent the occurrence of a white brightening phenomenon. For this purpose, the brightness at a no voltage condition (base brightness) is set to a normalized level for all pixels in the liquid crystal panel that are required to exhibit uniform display performance. Further, temperature variations in the liquid crystal panel are eliminated to stabilize the brightness level and thereby prevent the occurrence of a white darkening phenomenon. Means is also provided for repeatedly performing normalization processes automatically or manually.

In a liquid crystal display using a liquid crystal exhibiting a smectic phase, a display of good quality is accomplished by alleviating the burn-in phenomenon caused by its layer structure or by an internal electric field induced by spontaneous polarization. To achieve this, the liquid crystal display is equipped with a display data conversion circuit which forcibly sets an arbitrary pixel into a prescribed display state for a prescribed period regardless of the display data to be written to the pixel, thereby correcting the change of its layer structure and preventing the internal electric field due to the spontaneous polarization occurring in the same direction from lasting for too long a period.
