The invention relates to a process for the compression of molding sand in casting molds having a pattern plate with a pattern arranged therein. The molding sand is introduced loosely into the molding space located above the pattern plate and is thereafter fluidized to a final pressure of 20 bar maximum by means of a compressed-air surge acting on the molding sand followed by compression, by mechanical pressing. The process of the present invention provides a smooth pressure surge which is subdivided into at least a two part gradient in its pressure-rise time curve, so that the first part of the pressure-rise gradient takes place from 0.3 to 18 bar/sec to a pressure P.sub.1 and the second part has an increased pressure-rise gradient which takes place from 18 to 95 bar/sec. to a pressure P.sub.2 where P.sub.1

Process for automatically measuring the shearing resistance of green sand used in a repetitive sand molding process using pattern plates, and for using the measurements in such a way as to modulate the various parameters of the process in which a measuring ring is placed upon one of the pattern plates. The measuring ring has an opening and stress gauges fastened within narrowed sections of said measuring ring on either side of said opening. The gauges are connected electrically through the pattern plate to an electronic measurement and operation device within which various physical measurements are computed, including the shearing resistance of the test sample of sand compressed within said opening. The result of said measurements is processed by a computer to determine the magnitude of modulations to be made, particularly that pertaining to the replenishment of agglomerating agents for the recycled sand.

The specification discloses a strike off apparatus for leveling and compacting mounds of sand extending above the upper edges of open-top mold boxes of varying heights carried in succession along a pathway. A pair of pivotally supported rollers extend across the pathway. A sensor determines the height of a sand mound in a mold box before it reaches the rollers. An elevating mechanism responsive to the sensor adjusts the rollers to a height so that they level and compact the sand mound as the mold box is carried thereunder. A control system including electrical and hydraulic circuits is provided for automatically controlling the cyclical operation of the apparatus.

An automatic method for producing molds using chemically bonded sands which consists of a molding machine adapted to produce either honeycomb (horizontally parted) or controlled contour (vertically parted) mold elements. The molding machine is provided with a venturi-type blow head having dual blow valves and an integral air chamber. Carriage means are provided to selectively move a sand magazine and catalyst manifold between their respective fill and work stations on the molding machine. A hydraulically actuated mold receiver, trunnion rollover and shuttle car means are provided to selectively receive the completed molds from the molding machine and transport them to associated mold finishing and closing means. A hydraulically actuated pattern clamp table is provided with an enclosed pattern and stripper pin stool having a separate hydraulically actuated stripper pin plate. The enclosed pattern and stripper pin stool is an integral catalyst exhaust manifold. A mold squeeze method is provided to selectively permit compression of the sand mold prior to the gassing of the chemically bonded sand mold.

An improved method for isostatically molding an elongated, cylindrical article from a powdered material. In accordance with the improved method, a mold, containing powdered material, is placed within a two-piece, perforated canister. The two pieces which form the canister are then resiliently clamped together. Thereafter, in accordance with conventional practice, the canister and the mold containing the powdered material are subjected to an isostatic pressing process. During the decompression step of this process, the mold may radially expand by pressing outwardly against the two-piece canister and thereby causing radial movement of the two-piece canister.By the use of this improved process, it has been found that long, slender rods can be isostatically molded whereas many prior art attempts to mold such rods have not been successful.
