    摘要: A one-piece blank forms a liquid-tight carton having plural rectangular side walls sealed or integral with one another at adjoining side edges and flat end panels of polygonal shape, the carton facilitating ultrasonic scaling of the end walls to the side walls through a unique set of sealing tabs on the side and end walls. The process and equipment for sealing the end walls to the side walls permits ultrasonic heating and sealing after the carton is full of liquid through a compression of the sealing tabs of these walls between facing dies which are diagonally aligned in relationship to the side and end walls. The carton formed by this blank facilitates nesting of multiple cartons, one above the other.

    摘要: A machine for sealing the top and/or bottom flaps of random size cases is disclosed. The location of the front and rear of cases moved through the machine by a conveyor is continuously monitored by a programmable controller that uses the location information to control the operation of various case alignment, flap folding, and glue-applying mechanisms. Case entry is initially prohibited by a raised gate. When the conveyor reaches a predetermined position the gate is lowered and a case enters the machine. As a case enters the machine, the case is aligned along the center of the case path of travel through the machine; and a T-deck drops to allow the bottom major flaps to separate from the bottom minor flaps. Such separation is necessary for the bottom flaps to be sealed simultaneously with the top flaps. If the bottom flaps are sealed when the case enters the machine, no separation occurs. As the case continues to move through the machine, a kicker carriage is lowered, top rails (mounted on the kicker carriage) are moved inwardly and a kicker (also mounted on the kicker carriage) is actuated. As a result, the upper minor flaps of the case are first folded, followed by a partial folding of the upper major flaps. The case is then moved past top and bottom glue heads that apply glue (if programmed to do so) to the top and bottom flaps at front and rear locations in an operator programmed (continuous or intermittent) pattern. The length of the glue pattern is also operator programmable. After the glue is applied, the case moves under a compression carriage that is lowered to apply vertical pressure that causes the major flaps to adhere to the minor flaps in regions where glue is applied by the glue heads. As the case moves beneath the compression carriage discharge rails are moved inwardly to maintain the case alignment. After each of their functions has been performed, the various movable mechanisms (the infeed, top and discharge raisl, and the kicker and compression carriages) are repositioned for the next case being moved through the machine. In this regard, two cases may be sequentially moved through the machine by the conveyor mechanism, with the front and rear of both cases being continuously monitored by the programmable controller.

    摘要: A case sealing machine, wherein the position of cases moving through the machine is continuously monitored by a programmable controller that uses information about case position to control the operation of various flap folding and glue applying mechanisms, is disclosed. Cases are moved through the machine by a chain-driven flight bar conveyor mechanism. Case entry is prevented by a raised gate until the flight bar conveyor mechanism is synchronized. Thereafter, the gate is lowered and a power roller feeds the case into the machine. After entering the machine, a case is pushed through the machine by the flight bar conveyor mechanism. The programmable case sealing machine can be programmed to seal the top and/or bottom of the case. If the bottom is to be sealed, the bottom major flaps of the case are separated from the bottom minor flaps by a T-deck mechanism as the case enters the machine. If the bottom of the case was previously sealed, the T-deck is rendered inoperative by the program. As the case proceeds through the programmable case sealing machine, the leading one of the top minor flaps is folded rearwardly so as to lie between the top major flaps. Then, if the top of the case is to be sealed, a kicker is actuated to fold the trailing top minor flap forwardly, between the top major flaps. The duration of both the T-deck and kicker functions is programmable. The case is then moved between top and bottom glue heads, which apply glue (if programmed to do so) to the flaps in a programmed pattern. The case sealing machine can be programmed to apply glue in a stitch (e.g., intermittent) pattern or a continuous pattern. After the glue is applied, the top major flaps are folded over the top minor flaps (and the bottom major flaps under the bottom minor flaps, if the case bottom is being sealed) and the case moved under rollers that apply pressure, which causes the major flaps to adhere to the minor flaps in regions where glue was applied by the glue heads. In the event the case sealing machine jams and causes the flight bar conveyor mechanism to stop or slow down to an undesirably low speed, the case sealing machine is stopped and a jam display created.

    摘要: For the fabrication of a bag-in-box (BIB) package, there is first provided a semifinished, collapsed BIB package wherein a flattened bag is placed within a collapsed box and secured to at least one of its inside surfaces by means of an adhesive. After erecting the package, the bag is inflated into close internal contact with the box by introducing a gas under pressure through a fitment attached to the bag and projecting outwardly of the box. The opposite ends of the box are closed with sets of foldable end flaps, with the aid of an adhesive. Preferably, the bag is further secured to the inside surfaces of a pair of opposed ones of the four bottom end flaps of the box. The opposed pair of bottom flaps are held folded out during the introduction of the pressurized gas into the bag, in order that the bottom end portion of the inflated bag may make neat contact with the inside surfaces of the box. There is also disclosed herein an apparatus for thus fabricating the BIB package.

The carton is continuously moved along a conveyor path with one of the gusset panels leading and the other trailing. A folding head moves along a parallel conveyor path and translates to a location adjacent the carton. An abutment adjacent the conveyor path contacts the leading gusset panel and folds it inward along a line at about a 45.degree. angle to its hinged edges. An arm mounted on the folding head is caused to swing relative to the conveyor to fold the trailing gusset panel inward along a line at about a 45.degree. angle to its hinged edges.

    摘要: Method and apparatus for the forming, sealing and closing of packages utilizing blanks created from fiberboard substratum to which sheeting having thermoplastic characteristics is laminated by a moisture-resistant heat-weakenable substance, such as microcrystalline wax. A tubular blank having an interior sheeting lining is first formed from the flat blank, as by forming a fin-type side seam which may be located in one body wall. The end closure is formed by panels hinged to each of the four body walls, with one of these panels serving as the main closure panel and being of sufficient size to overlie the entire end opening. A pair of gusset panels flank the main panel and a short flange panel is hinged to the opposite, parallel body wall. After outfolding the gussets and the flange panel, a continuous membrane seal is created along the three edges of the end opening by heat-sealing the sheeting associated with these panels. Delamination is effected during this heat-sealing, and after infolding the gussets and the flange panel, the main closure panel is secured in overlying position as by a hot melt adhesive.
