Abstract:
A machine (10) for erecting article carriers (C) of the basket type comprises feeder assembly (34; 62) for withdrawing from a supply (20) and depositing the carriers in flat, folded condition one after the other in a feed path (F), flight bars for feeding (22) each carrier to an erecting station (E) at which means suction cups (96) are provided for moving apart opposite side walls of the carrier to bring it into set-up condition and locking arms (100) operable on a base panel (b) of the carrier to move the base panel into engagement with panel retaining elements (h) provided by the carrier, thereby to locate the base panel in a position in which it discourages collapse of the set-up carrier.
Abstract:
A case opener and bottom sealer machine that includes a frame, a conveyor assembly on the frame for stacks of flat folded case blanks, a lift assembly on the frame that includes suction cups for grippingly engaging the uppermost blank of the adjacent stack and elevating the gripped blank, longitudinally elongated rails on the frame for supporting a blank in an erect condition as it is moved therealong, a case erect assembly mounted on the frame for opening the gripped blank to an erect condition and after the erect blank is released by the cups move the erect blank along the rails, folder mechanism for folding the minor flaps at one end of the erect blank and thence partially fold the major flaps of the erect blank, a glue device for applying glue to the folded minor flaps, a compression assembly for completing the folding of the major flaps and holding the folded flaps under compression to provide a good seal, and controls for automatically operating the conveyor, erect, and compression assemblies and the glue device.
Abstract:
An elongated carton supporting rail is mounted on a frame along with means for guiding an opened-out upright carbon blank to a predetermined position, with the edges of its bottom minor flaps resting on the rail. Flap closing elements automatically engage the bottom minor and major flaps of the carton in sequence immediately following the engagement of the carton with a switch lever when the carton is in the proper position on the rail. The minor flaps are folded above the carton supporting surface of the rail and in parallelism therewith, and the major flaps are folded below the carton supporting surface of the rail. The carton is then filled while supported on the rail, and thereafter is engaged by a pushing element and slid longitudinally off the discharge end of the rail.
Abstract:
A machine is disclosed for erecting cases stored in upright, flattened positions in storage magazines. The machine includes means for extracting end member cases from the magazines, for dropping the extracted cases into drop chutes, for urging the cases in a generally horizontal direction out of the drop chutes, for opening the flattened cases by spreading the case sides apart, for tucking in lower case end flaps, for folding one case bottom panel in under the tucked end flaps, for applying adhesive to the bottom surface of the folded bottom panel, for folding another bottom panel in under the bottom panel having adhesive thereon, and for compressing the two bottom panels together.
Abstract:
A carton erector apparatus for setting up folding carton blanks and unfolding their bottom flaps. The apparatus includes a carton blank storage section, a carton blank set-up section and a bottom flap folding section. The carton blank storage section includes a magazine assembly for storing and urging knocked-down carton blanks towards the carton set-up section. The carton set-up section includes a carton opening assembly mounted on a substantially horizontal carriage plate movable in a direction transverse to the direction of movement of the carton blanks in the magazine assembly. A pivot arm assembly is pivotally secured to the folding arm assembly and is movable between first and second position respectively parallel and perpendicular to the folding arm assembly. A suction cup is secured to the pivot arm assembly to grasp the side panel of the forward carton in the magazine assembly when the pivot arm assembly and the folding arm assembly into their second positions is effective to set-up the carton blank into a tubular form. Bottom flap folding plough bars are provided to infold the bottom flaps of the set-up carton.
Abstract:
This invention relates to an automatic machine for closing the lower flaps of a parallelepiped box with foldable flaps and for then retaining the box in a position suitable for its filling with the product to be packaged. The machine according to the invention comprises a T section, a pair of parallel bars disposed in front of said section and a pair of lateral plates, all of which can be rotated sequentially from respective rest positions to respective work position in order to close sequentially the end lower flaps and the lateral lower flaps of a parallelepiped box.
Abstract:
A carton magazine apparatus, carton feeder apparatus and carton loader apparatus for feeding and loading erected cartons, in pairs, on a pair of mandrels for forming the bottom end of the cartons. The carton magazine apparatus includes a pair of carton magazines disposed in side-by-side, spaced apart positions, with each of the carton magazines containing a plurality of flattened cartons. The carton feeder apparatus includes a pair of swingably mounted carton feeder arms, with one of the carton feeder arms being operatively disposed adjacent the carton discharge end of one of the magazines and the other carton feeder arm being operatively disposed adjacent the carton discharge end of the other magazine. The pair of carton feeder arms are operable to simultaneously withdraw a flattened carton from each of the carton magazines and move them into an erected tubular position in alignment with a pair of mandrels on a packaging machine. The carton loader apparatus includes a pair of carton loader hooks and carton guide means for moving the pair of erected tubular cartons upwardly onto the two mandrels on the packaging machine. Power drive means is provided for operating the carton feeder apparatus and the carton loader apparatus.
Abstract:
Cartons of the leakproof type comprising a rectangular sleeve each end of which is formed with crease lines to present four closure wall portions or flaps, two of said flaps being further provided with crease lines defining triangular portions to provide gussets, are closed by apparatus comprising means for holding a carton in position for closure, a pair of angularly movable pressure plates adapted to engage the triangular portions of the end wall flaps and to partially fold inwardly the end and side wall flaps, a pair of spaced pressure rods to further fold inwardly the end and side wall flaps so that the free ends of the side wall flaps are in overlapping engagement, and a pressure bar provided to engage the overlapping side wall flaps along a previously applied line of adhesive. A reaction plate may be provided to co-act with the pressure bar. The end closure apparatus may be incorporated in an installation for filling and closing cartons.

Abstract:
An apparatus for sealing a fin at a gabled end of a carton is disclosed. The apparatus includes a longitudinal force mechanism for applying a sealing force to a first pair of opposed flaps of the gabled end of the carton. The longitudinal force mechanism is movable from a first position in which the gabled end of the carton is in a generally open condition to a second position at which the fin of the gabled end is sealed. A transverse force mechanism applies oppositely directed transverse forces to a second pair of opposed flaps of the gabled end of the carton as the longitudinal force mechanism moves from the first position to the second position. The transverse force mechanism urges the second pair of opposed flaps toward one another during movement of the longitudinal force mechanism. The second pair of opposed flaps are thus urged inward toward one another as the longitudinal force mechanism moves to form and seal the fin thereby preventing "duckbilling".
