    摘要: An airflow damper is affixed to a top interior wall of a hard disk assembly, so that a specified gap distance between the airflow damper and an upper disk within the hard disk assembly is realized. The gap distance is determined as a function of velocity of the driven disks. The airflow damper is designed to have a thickness so that the determined gap distance is realized for the given velocity. The airflow damper eliminates secondary airflow within the hard disk assembly, to prevent formation of a large vortex above the upper disk and to thus reduce airborne noise.

    摘要: The filter construction includes a first portion that removes or reduces contaminants entering a disk drive enclosure from the external atmosphere and a second portion that removes or reduces contaminants present within the disk drive enclosure. Air exits the first portion in an area of the disk drive enclosure having a low air pressure. The second portion has an adsorbent filter, such as a recirculation filter, which allows air or gas to flow therethrough with little resistance. The filter construction has an exit positioned approximately parallel to the periphery of a disk in the disk drive enclosure, so that air exiting the filter construction is generally perpendicular to the air currents produced by the spinning disk.

    摘要: A lubricating perfluoropolyether (PFPE) composition for lubricating one or more disks in a disk drive system may be formed by providing a first component of PFPE molecules having an aggregate vapor pressure in the range of 1×10−6 to 1×10−11 atm and a second component of PFPE molecules comprising at least 5% of the total number of molecules of the first component, wherein the second component includes an aggregate vapor pressure lower than that of the first component. The first and second components are mixed together to form a homogeneous composition, which may be in the liquid form. The composition may be introduced into a reservoir in a vapor phase lubricant reservoir system in a disk drive enclosure.

The mechanism includes anechoic features formed on the interior of the disc enclosure, using a liner formed with the anechoic features or having the anechoic features formed integral on one or both of the cover and base plate.

The apparatus and method uses the Von Karman Viscous Pump Principle to strategically introduce holes in the housings and brackets of the multimedia radio to improve the air flow across at least one of the surfaces of an installed and operational disk. The amount, size, and configuration of these holes are a function of the type and size of disk used and the rotational speed of the disk in operation. This reduces the possibility of hot media and reduces the possibility of heat shutdown of disk components.

    摘要: A particulate filter for a disc drive also functions as an acoustic noise filter and a mechanical vibration filter. The impaction filter covers substantial portions of the interior of the disc drive housing, thus reducing particulates in both radial and tangential airflow currents. The impaction filter is constructed of a soft material, such as polypropylene and modified acrylic fibers, so that particulates are bound to the surface of the impaction filter upon impact. The textured surface of the filter and the static caused by the operation of the discs in close proximity with the filter cause the particulates to tend to remain bound to the filter. Because the impaction filter covers substantial portions of the interior of the disc drive housing, rather than specific locations within the housing, the particulates in the tangential airflow currents are reduced. Moreover, the fabrication and coverage area of the impaction filter reduces acoustic noise and mechanical vibrations.

    摘要: An information storage device (10, 510, 610, 710) includes a cradle (12, 512, 612, 712) which can removably receive a cartridge (11, 411, 511, 611, 711) that contains a rotatable hard disk (91, 326-327). The cartridge contains a pivotal actuator arm (101), which supports a read/write head (107, 331-334) for movement adjacent the disk. Circuitry is provided within the sealed housing (59), including a preamplifier (111) for the head. A connector (71) is provided on the exterior of the housing, and is coupled to electrical components within the cartridge, including the head and preamplifier. Structure is provided to prevent static electricity from damaging electrical components when the cartridge is not installed in a cradle. One approach is to provide an electrostatic discharge buffer (112) between the connector and electrical components within the cartridge. An alternative approach is to provide a cover (73) which has a conductive layer (76) that shorts out terminals of the connector when the cartridge is not inserted in the cradle.
