摘要:
An interferometer comprises a delay element and a phase shift element. The delay element delays an optical DQPSK signal by one-symbol time. The phase shift element shifts the optical DQPSK signal by π/8. A pair of photodiodes converts each of a pair of optical signals output from the interferometer into an electric signal. A photodetector circuit converts differential current obtained by a pair of the photodiodes into voltage and outputs as a detection signal. A first decision circuit outputs one-bit information based on the voltage of the detection signal. A second decision circuit outputs one-bit information based on a squared value of the voltage of the detection signal.

In a digital signal processing circuit of an optical receiver applicable to this method for electric power supply control, tap coefficients of a filter used in a waveform equalization section are calculated in a tap coefficient calculating section, based on a state of an optical fiber transmission line. Then, among the calculated tap coefficients, a tap coefficient for which an absolute value is less than a previously determined threshold is determined, and electric power supply to a circuit part of a filter corresponding to the tap coefficient is stopped. As a result, for an optical receiver that performs digital signal processing, it is possible to reduce the power consumption, while realizing waveform equalization at a high accuracy.

A first optical splitter splits an input optical signal and outputs it to first and second optical paths. A second optical splitter outputs the optical signal from the first optical path to third and fourth optical paths. A third optical splitter outputs the optical signal from the second optical path to fifth and sixth optical paths. In the second optical path, 1-symbol delay element and π/4 phase shifter element are configured. In the fourth optical path, π/2 phase shifter element is configured. First and second adjuster circuits adjust the optical path length of the second and the fourth optical paths, respectively, by temperature control. A first optical coupler couples optical signals transmitted via the third and the fifth optical paths. A second optical coupler couples optical signals transmitted via the fourth and the sixth optical paths. Photodetectors convert the optical signals from the optical couplers into electrical signals.

A drive signal generation unit generates first and second drive signals for driving first and second phase modulators of a DQPSK optical modulator. First and second regeneration circuits regenerate the first and second drive signals with respect to clock signals. The first and second phase modulators are driven by the regenerated first and second drive signals. The amplitude of the first drive signal is adjusted by a first attenuator. The clock signal for the second regeneration circuit is applied after attenuated by a second attenuator. The delay time caused by the first attenuator is the same as the delay time caused by the second attenuator.

In a PMD compensator of the present invention, a signal light input to an input terminal is supplied to a polarizer via a polarization controller; a part of polarized light transmitted through the polarizer is branched by an optical coupler as a monitor light; the monitor light is converted into a electrical signal by a photodiode; a clock corresponding to a RZ clock frequency of the signal light is extracted from the electrical signal using a band-pass filter, to thereby monitor the intensity thereof; and the polarization controller is feedback controlled by a PC control section so that the monitored intensity of the clock becomes maximum. As a result, a miniaturized and low-cost PMD compensator which can reliably compensate for first-order polarization mode dispersion of a RZ-pulsed signal light is provided.

A method and system for transmitting information in a wavelength division multiplex (WDM) or other suitable multichannel optical communication system includes receiving a multichannel signal having a symbol rate and comprising a plurality of non-intensity modulated optical information signals. The non-intensity modulated optical information signals have a minimum channel spacing comprising a multiple of the symbol rate within 0.4 to 0.6 of an integer. The non-intensity modulated optical information signals are separated from the multichannel signal and each converted into an intensity modulated optical information signal using an asymmetric interferometer. A data signal is recovered from the intensity modulated optical information signal.

A small size and low cost optical receiving apparatus, which can stably demodulate the signal, lights in accordance with the differential M-phase shift keying (DMPSK) system. An optical receiving apparatus comprises a light branching unit for branching the differential M-phase shift keying signal beam into four signal light beams, a delay adjusting unit giving a delay time difference of one symbol between a first signal light beam and a second signal light beam and between a third signal light beam and a fourth signal light beam, a demodulating unit for outputting a least two demodulated light signals through respective interferences between the first signal light beam and the second signal light beam, and between the third signal light beam and the fourth signal light beam on one plane which is not parallel to any signal light beam, and at least two optical detectors for converting at least two light signals into electrical signals.

In an optical receiver according to the present invention, an input signal light subjected to the differential quadrature phase shift keying (DQPSK) is incident on a PANDA type fiber in a linearly polarized state by 45°, so that a delay time difference corresponding to one symbol is generated between orthogonal polarization components in the DQPSK signal light, and then, the signal light is branched by a half mirror into two, to be sent to first and second paths respectively, thereby giving, by a ¼ wave plate disposed on one of the paths, a relative birefringent amount difference of π/2 between the lights propagated through the respective paths. Then, each of the lights propagated through the first and second paths is separated into two orthogonal polarization components by a polarization beam splitter, and the respective polarization components are received by a differential reception circuit so that in-phase components and quadrature components in the DQPSK signal are demodulated. Thus, a small sized and low cost optical receiver capable of stably demodulating the DQPSK signal is provided.

An optical cross-connect includes multiple input ports that each receive an optical input signal and multiple output ports that each output an optical output signal. The optical cross-connect also includes a distributing amplifier associated with each input port that generates multiple copies of the input signal received at the associated input port. Furthermore, the optical cross-connect includes multiple filter units that receive a copy of one or more of the input signals from one or more of the distributing amplifiers and forward traffic in selected channels of one or more of the received copies. In addition, the optical cross-connect includes a combining amplifier associated with each output port. Each combining amplifier receives the traffic in one or more of the channels forwarded by one or more of the filter units and combines the received traffic into an output signal to be output from the associated output port. The optical cross-connect further includes one or more regeneration modules that each regenerate the traffic in one or more channels of one or more of the input signals.
