There is provided a process directed to the use of gases containing or mixed with carbon monoxide, such as synthesis gas, to aid in the regeneration of sulfur oxide-sorbed solid oxides, such as magnesium aluminates or spinels. This process is especially useful in applications where the solid oxide is used to purify the flue gas stream from an FCC regenerator, coal or oil-fired plant, power plant or process heat furnace, or the tail gas from a Claus plant. The process is also useful to remove sulfur oxides from flue gases produced in solid fuel combusters. According to this invention, carbon monoxide may be used alone or in combination with other gases to make the regeneration of the solid oxide exothermic or less endothermic, thereby improving the effectiveness of the regeneration.

There is provided a catalyst comprising a hydrogenation/dehydrogenation component, such as a noble metal, and an acidic solid component comprising a Group IVB metal oxide modified with an oxyanion of a Group VIB metal. An example of this catalyst is zirconia, modified with tungstate and platinum. There is also provided a method for preparing this catalyst. This catalyst may be used, for example, to isomerize C.sub.4 to C.sub.8 paraffins. The feed to this paraffin isomerization reaction may, optionally, include cyclic hydrocarbons, such as benzene or cyclohexane, which may undergo ring opening reactions during the course of the isomerization reaction.

There is provided a process for the net catalytic oxidative dehydrogenation of alkanes to produce alkenes. The process involves simultaneous equilibrium dehydrogenation of alkanes to alkenes and combustion of the hydrogen formed to drive the equilibrium dehydrogenation reaction further to the product alkenes. In the present reaction, the alkane feed is dehydrogenated over an equilbrium dehydrogenation catalyst in a first reactor, and the effluent from the first reactor is then passed into a second reactor containing a reducible metal oxide which serves to selectively combust hydrogen in an oxidation/reduction (REDOX) reaction. This particular mode of operation is termed a separate reactor, REDOX mode.

An improved Colorimeter which can be used to analyze samples in either a stationary mode (e.g. in a test tube) or in a flow-through mode wherein the sample flows through the apparatus. The Colorimeter is equipped with means to direct the illuminating radiation selectively to either mode of sample.
