In accordance with an exemplary aspect of the invention, a user may opt to display status icons on one row of a display and include an abbreviated text associated with each icon that is displayed when a particular icon is highlighted by the user. If no icon is highlighted by the user, the most important status text (determined based on predetermined criteria) is displayed. The user has the option of switching to a large status display to view additional information relating to the status icons.

One method of displaying to a user messages having different levels of security includes receiving a message over a network includes examining an attribute of the message to determine a security-related level associated with the message. A visual indication for display to a device user is generated by the device. Such visual indication is indicative of the determined security-related level, and is configured to be visible during scrolling through a majority of the message text.

A messaging application permits a message sender to create a message composition intended to be sent to at least one message address. The message address includes a first portion identifying the message address as belonging to a group of addresses and a second portion identifying the message address as belonging to a specific address within the group. A determination is made if the first portion of the message address identifies the message address as belonging to a predetermined group or groups of addresses; if the first portion does not identify the message address as belonging to the predetermined group or groups of addresses, a warning is provide to the user of the device.
