    摘要: A polymer syrup for encapsulating solar cell assemblies. The syrup includes uncrosslinked poly(n-butyl)acrylate dissolved in n-butyl acrylate monomer. Preparation of the poly(n-butyl)acrylate and preparation of the polymer syrup is disclosed.Methods for applying the polymer syrup to solar cell assemblies as an encapsulating pottant are described. Also included is a method for solar cell construction utilizing the polymer syrup as a dual purpose adhesive and encapsulating material.

    摘要: Photostable and weather stable absorping copolymers have been prepared from acrylic esters such as methyl methacrylate containing 0.1 to 5% of an 2-hydroxy-allyl benzophenone, preferably the 4,4' dimethoxy derivative thereof. The pendant benzophenone chromophores protect the acrylic backbone and when photoexcited do not degrade the ester side chain, nor abstract hydrogen from the backbone.

    摘要: Implantable pressure sensors and implantable electronics should be packaged in hermetically sealed modules with biocompatible surfaces before being implanted. Packaging designs should be compact and cause little to no interference with the mechanical (and optical) properties or functions of the implant. For a pressure sensor in an intraocular lens, this means that the sensor and packaging should allow the lens to be folded so that it can be implanted through a small incision in the eye. An inventive implantable pressure sensor is coated with a silicone elastomer and hermetically sealed by a multilayer coating of SiOx and Parylene C, which may also encapsulate other components, including a microcontroller or processor, rechargeable batteries, sensors, resistors, capacitors, wireless transceivers, and/or antennas mounted on a transparent substrate. This combination of silicone gel and multilayer coating isolates the pressure sensor from surrounding tissue while allowing the pressure sensor to measure pressure precisely and quickly.

    摘要: Aspects of the present invention provide multifocal ophthalmic lenses—for example, an ophthalmic lens having a progressive addition optical power region—having one or more discontinuities. The discontinuities can be used to merge or connect regions of the lens surface having different curvatures or average optical power. The use of discontinuities can obviate the need for blend zones which are largely responsible for the introduction of unwanted astigmatism in conventional lenses. In turn, a multifocal ophthalmic lens of the present invention can provide a desired additive power with less unwanted astigmatism than a conventional progressive addition lens (PAL).

    摘要: A mechanism allows for changing the optical strength of a liquid-filled lens having a cavity filled with fluid. A reservoir contains additional fluid and is in fluid communication with the cavity, and the mechanism draws fluid from the reservoir into the cavity or pulls fluid from the cavity back into the reservoir, whereby a change in the amount of fluid within the lens cavity changes the lens's optical strength. A membrane seals the reservoir, and a plunger impinges upon the membrane. A movement device, such as a barrel screw or lever, moves the plunger in a controlled manner toward the membrane to increase pressure within the reservoir and thereby force fluid out of the reservoir into the lens cavity, and away from the membrane to decrease pressure within the reservoir and thereby withdraw fluid from the lens cavity and into the reservoir.
