摘要: One embodiment is directed to a method of segregating one or more content addressable storage systems into a plurality of virtual pools. The virtual pools can be allocated to different content sources and/or can be assigned to different storage system capabilities. Another embodiment is directed to transmitting with an input/output request for a content unit information specifying at least one storage capability to be applied to the content unit, and/or receiving such an I/O and implementing the specified storage system capabilities. Another embodiment is directed to extracting from an I/O request from a source information relating to an impact of the I/O on at least one characteristic of the content units stored on a CAS system from the source. Another embodiment is directed to storing information for content identifying the source and/or reading information associated with a stored content unit and determining based at least in part thereon, at least one characteristic of the content units stored from a source.

摘要: One embodiment of the present invention is directed to providing a software layer that provides a Content Addressable Storage (CAS) capability in a computer system in which the content units are ultimately stored on a block I/O storage system. An application program may issue access requests to content units referring to them via a content address, and the software layer can convert such access requests to block I/O commands to be processed by the block I/O storage system. Thus, a CAS capability can be provided despite the absence of a storage system that provides such a capability natively.

摘要: One embodiment of the invention is directed to providing a single instance storage capability in a content addressable computer system that stores content units in a time-based directory structure. Another embodiment is directed to managing access to content units that do not include a timestamp in their content addresses, in a time-based directory structure. A further embodiment is directed to accessing replicated content units stored on a computer, based on a time of replication. A further embodiment is directed to employing a bitmap in a time-based directory structure which may be used to indicate whether any content units stored during a specified time range are stored in the directory structure.

摘要: One embodiment is a method and apparatus for modifying retention periods in a storage system, in which previously defined retention periods for units of data may be reduced. In another embodiment, the retention period of a unit of data may be modified in response to the occurrence of an event by renewing previously defined retention periods until the occurrence of the event is detected. If the occurrence of the event is detected, a retention period associated with that event may be established for the unit of data. In yet another embodiment, retention classes are used to define retention periods for units of data so that the retention period of a unit of data may be modified without modifying the unit of data itself. In a further embodiment, a request to the storage system to reduce a retention period includes authentication information that the storage system may use to verify the request.

摘要: One embodiment is a system for locating content on a storage system, in which the storage system provides a location hint to the host of where the data is physically stored, which the host can resubmit with future access requests. In another embodiment, an index that maps content addresses to physical storage locations is cached on the storage system. In yet another embodiment, intrinsic locations are used to select a storage location for newly written data based on an address of the data. In a further embodiment, units of data that are stored at approximately the same time having location index entries that are proximate in the index.
