摘要: A method of operating a packet data multicast communication system which comprises a network or NodeB (BS) and a plurality of mobile stations (MS1, MS2, MS3). The network and the mobile stations have transceiving equipment (14, 34) for the transmission of data packets on a downlink between the network and mobile stations, and feedback signalling (ACK/NACK) on an uplink. The mobile stations have means for receiving a data packet transmitted by the first station, means (46) for measuring the quality of reception, means (30, 48) for determining into which one of at least three predetermined quality ranges the measured quality falls. Each of the at least three predetermined quality ranges represents a respective transmitter behavior of the first station and the transmitter behavior corresponding to at least two non-contiguous ones of the quality ranges is identical.

摘要: Data is transmitted from a radio communication device (100) by selecting a signal dependent on data to be transmitted, transmitting to a radio communication station (200) the selected signal as a random access transmission, deriving an identifier dependent on the data, and employing the identifier to identify a subsequently received signal intended for the radio communication device (100). The data is received at a radio communication station (200) by receiving the random access signal which is indicative of the data to be received, determining the data indicated by the random access signal, deriving an identifier dependent on the determined data, and including the identifier in a subsequent transmission from the radio communication station (200) to identify the intended recipient of the subsequent transmission.

摘要: A radio communication system comprises a secondary station having a communication channel with a primary station for the transmission of data packets from the primary station to the secondary station. In response to receipt of a data packet, the secondary station transmits a combined acknowledgement and quality parameter signal (402) to the primary station. The signal (402) indicates whether the data packet was received correctly and the value of the quality parameter enables the primary station to select transmission parameters for further data transmissions. A range of formats for the combined signal are possible. In one embodiment the quality parameter is a site selection signal indicating a preferred subset of primary stations for subsequent data transmissions. In another embodiment the quality parameter relates to the quality of the radio link and enables the primary station to select suitable modulation and coding schemes and/or transmit power levels.

摘要: In order to enable isochronous data to be transmitted over communications systems which may introduce timing jitter each packet of isochronous data is provided with a timestamp which indicates to a receiver the time at which a packet should be processed. The receiver notes the time the first packet of a data stream arrive and adds a given offset time which is greater than or equal to the maximum jitter to produce a time t1. Each succeeding packet is processed at a time t=t1+(Tn−T1), where T1 is the timestamp in the first data packet and Tn is the timestamp in the current packet. Thus the processing at the receiver is dependent on the relative times of arrival of the packets rather than the absolute times defined by the timestamps.

摘要: A radio communication system comprises a primary station adapted to transmit a series of data packets on a downlink channel to a secondary station. The primary station determines a property relating to the Doppler spread of the downlink channel and uses this property in the determination of suitable parameters for packet transmission. Possible properties from which an indication of the Doppler spread can be derived include the received signal to interference ratio and the transmitted power control commands. Possible parameters for packet transmission include transmission power, modulation and coding scheme, delay before retransmission of a packet received in error, and spreading factor.By determining packet transmission parameters based on uplink signal properties or on transmitted power control commands, the need for the secondary station to measure radio channel properties and signal these to the primary station is removed, thereby reducing signalling traffic and overall interference levels and extending battery life.

摘要: A radio communication system comprises a primary station (100) for transmitting information signals on a downlink channel (122) and for receiving signals from one or more secondary stations (110) on an uplink random access packet channel (RACH) (124), the downlink and uplink channels being independent of each other. Power control is applied to the transmitted downlink signals by at least one of the secondary stations transmitting indicia indicating the prevailing radio channel characteristics of the uplink channel, the indicia being used by the primary station to apply power control to the downlink signals. If the uplink signals are CDMA signals the indicia may comprise a timing offset which has a value related to the quantity to be signalled.

摘要: A radio communication system comprising a primary station and a plurality of secondary stations has a communication channel for the transmission of information from a secondary station to the primary station. The secondary station can adjust its output transmission power at a plurality of different rates, and the primary station can instruct the secondary station which of the plurality of rates it should use.The primary station determines the optimum rate for the secondary station to use by measurement of characteristics of signals received from the secondary station, for example the average signal to interference ratio, and instructs the secondary station accordingly. Other indication may be used to determine or verify the optimum rate, for example further properties of the received signals or information on the speed of the secondary station.

摘要: A wireless local area network (LAN) comprises a primary station (PS) having a radio transceiver unit and a plurality of secondary stations (SS). Each secondary radio station having its own transceiver unit. The primary station operates in accordance with a time division protocol having a plurality of concatenated frames. A predetermined number of the concatenated frames comprise a superframe which further includes a time slot (HiRBS). In response to the transmission of a system wide clock cycle synchronization signal the primary station initiates the transmission of a superframe and a secondary station (HN) out of range from the primary station and wishing to join the LAN but unable to communicate directly with the primary station transmits a signal burst in the time slot for reception by a secondary station (FN) which is in range of the primary station, the secondary station (FN). The secondary station (FN) acts as a relay station for the out-of-range secondary station(HN) during its registration with the LAN. The time slot (HiRBS) may be located in from of the first frame or within the first frame of the superframe.
