An optical modulation device which can facilitate a reduction in size of a device and prevent overheating of the optical modulation device, and a projection display device utilizing the optical modulation device are provided. In the optical modulation device, sapphire glasses are affixed to the light-incident side and the light-emitting side surfaces of liquid crystal panels which respectively modulates light of three colors of red, green, and blue emitted from a light source according to image information. Therefore, heat generated on optical modulation devices can be discharged, so that overheating of the optical modulation devices can be prevented, and a reduction in size can be achieved. In addition, since the sapphire glass is difficult to scratch, it becomes easy-to-handle, thereby facilitating the management of the optical modulation devices.

A liquid crystal panel unit is attached to a light incident surface of a prism composite. The liquid crystal panel unit includes a panel frame plate holding a liquid crystal panel, and a fixation frame plate glued and fixed to the light incident surface. The panel frame plate is fastened to the fixation frame plate by screws through an intermediate frame plate. By using wedges, the position of the panel frame plate with respect to the light incident surface is adjusted. This allows the liquid crystal panel to be reliably positioned and fixed so that the deviation amount in pixel matching is minimized and the focus adjustment can be accomplished correctly.

Because these large units 9 and 7 are vertically stacked, the front-back and right-left dimensions (i.e. length and width) of the overall apparatus can be reduced. An apparatus 1 that is easily portable and does not require a large installation space can therefore be achieved. Because the heavy power supply unit 7 is on the bottom, apparatus 1 is also stable when placed on a table, etc.
