摘要: An apparatus for displaying information comprising a resistive element, preferably a conductive polymer resistive element, adjacent to a thermochromic layer. When electrically powered, the resistive element heats the thermochromic layer above a transistion point causing the thermochromic layer to change from opaque to transparent. The resistive element exhibits PTC behavior and, therefore, does not overheat. The apparatus may be large in size and on a flexible substrate.

摘要: A device for testing a battery, particularly a small, portable battery, comprising a flexible, transparent substrate on which is deposited a narrow band of a black light absorbing material. A conductive material, which may taper outwardly in opposite directions from a central point to a pair of outer terminals, is then deposited atop the substrate on the same side of the substrate as the absorber layer or on the opposite side of the substrate as the absorber layer. A layer of a cholesteric liquid crystal material is then deposited on the substrate on the opposite side from the black absorber layer or over the absorber layer. The conductive material is an epoxy cement-based conductor, preferably silver, printed or painted directly on to the substrate. An indicator scale is located along sections of the conductive material. To test a dry cell battery, the terminal ends of the conductive material are placed in contact with the battery terminals, causing a current to flow which heats the conductive material, the heat generated being the most intense at the central point and radiating outwardly. The heat is transferred through the thin substrate to the liquid crystal layer which results in a color change in the liquid crystal. The traverse of the color change along the length of the indicator scale, outwardly from the center point, is proportional to the current or voltage output or the condition of the battery to be tested and can be read on the indicator scale which is calibrated accordingly. The tester also includes means for determining the amp-hours or life of a battery.

摘要: Recovery of a heat recoverable article can be carried out without a flame by wrapping around the article a flexible bag and introducing into the bag a liquid of sufficient temperature and heat capacity. Uniform recovery is ensured by maintaining a pressure within the bag so it conforms to the changing size or shape of the recovering article.

摘要: An array of thermochromic cells is formed along the end portion of a thin, highly conductive blade. Each cell is visually responsive to a critical temperature incrementally different from the critical temperatures of the other cells. The thermochromic array defines a set of temperature ranges, set off by the critical temperatures. The undersurface of the end portion is pressed down into contact with the hot surface of an object of unknown temperature. The contact pressure is established and maintained constant by bending the blade against the surface. The high elastic strength of the blade permits generous bends having high bending moments without creating a permanent set in the blade. Heat from the hot surface flows upward across the contact area and into the interior of the thin blade. The interior increase in temperature uniformly, with minimum pertubation; and the end portion rapidly obtains an equilibrium temperature substantially equal to the temperature of the object surface. Heat transients are minimal because the contact area is very large relative to the extreme thinness, and small thermal mass, of the blade. The array of thermochromic cells on the top surface of the end portion simultaneously receive heat from the interior. The cells having a lower critical temperature then the equilibrium temperature undergoes the visual change. The condition of the array reveals the equilibrium temperature to within one temperature increment.

摘要: A non-breakable digital thermometer and a method for its manufacture are provided. The thermometer comprises a plastic strip, either flexible or rigid, of microencapsulated temperature responsive liquid crystal material in a lateral array of numerical indicia, each index having associated with it liquid crystals having a temperature responsive range relevant to the numerical value of the index. Overlap of temperature responsive ranges is provided to insure at least one visible indicia, when the temperature being measured is within the range of interest.A substantially continuous sheet of an inert transparent base is sequentially printed with a darkly pigmented mask defining transparent indicia areas. Different liquid crystal composition slurries are coated in a continuous stripe over the appropriate indicia, with adjacent compositions allowed to mix at the edges, before rapid partial drying prevents additional mixing. The compositions are then dried substantially completely, and coated with a darkly pigmented coating. Individual strips are then cut transverse to the direction of movement of the film so as to provide individual digital thermometers.

摘要: The present invention is a dental implant device that mimics the structure and appearance of a real tooth. In some exemplary embodiments, the implant device may include a top portion, a bottom portion, and a cavity. The top portion is a crown portion adapted to mimic a crown of a real tooth. The bottom portion includes a root portion that is adapted to facilitate blood flow into the device. The cavity is adapted to receive and retain blood flow, which triggers the regeneration of dental pulp and dentin and makes the device vital. The dental pulp will contain real nerve roots which not only enable the artificial tooth to sense hot and cold, but also give the tooth vitality. The device is implanted into a patient's gum line and will gain strength in approximately 1½ months and be at full strength within 3 months.
