Abstract: A cooking system positionable on a support surface includes a housing having an internal cooking compartment and an opening formed in the housing for accessing said internal cooking compartment. At least one heating element is provided for heating said internal cooking compartment. The heating element is operable to heat the internal cooking compartment while the opening is at least partially exposed to an ambient environment to allow fluid transfer between the ambient environment and the internal cooking compartment. An output from said at least one heating element is variable across said internal cooking compartment during operation of the system.

Abstract: A cooking system includes a housing defining a hollow chamber configured to receive food. The housing has an upper portion defining an opening to said hollow chamber. A lid is movable relative to the housing between an open position and a closed position. A lid lock is associated with at least one of the lid and the housing. The lid is configurable between a lid locked condition with the housing and a lid unlocked condition with the housing via the lid lock. At least one vent is disposed in at least one of the lid and the housing, and the at least one vent is configurable between an open vent condition and a closed vent condition via actuation of the lid lock.

The grill plate has a thermal mass sufficient to maintain a temperature required to achieve a Maillard reaction of said food At least a portion of said cooking zone is disposed between said support surface and said heating element. Said heating element is operable to heat said support body to impart contact cooking from said support surface to food supported thereby in said cooking zone.
