Specific mixtures of tocopherol homologs exhibit surprisingly improved antioxidant effects in mint oil and mint-flavored chewing gum compositions. The mixtures of homologs fall within the range of 7-15% by weight alpha tocopherol, 45-70% by weight gamma tocopherol and 20-35% by weight delta tocopherol. Homologue mixtures within this range are superior to the constituent homologs used alone, and to other homologue mixtures, in terms of antioxidant effects. The compositions of the invention facilitate the replacement of controversial synthetic antioxidants currently used in mint oil and mint-flavored chewing gum, with naturally occurring tocopherols.

Cyanide reactive reducing sugars, such as xylose, ribose, arabinose, glyceraldehyde and erythrose, are added to a food, drug or other oral composition to detoxify cyanide. The cyanide reacive reducing sugar is added in an amount in excess of about 1 weight percent. The cyanide reactive reducing sugar may be mixed into the composition or may be applied as a coating on a solid composition. The cyanide reactive reducing sugar is one of the edible components of the gum.

Flavors in foods are enhanced by addition to the food of 1,8-dihydroxy-2,9-dithia-tricyclo[8.4.0.0.sup.3,8 ]tetradecane and derivatives thereof having the formula: ##STR1## and 1,7-dihydroxy-2,8-dithia tricyclo[7.3.0.0.sup.3,7 ]dodecane having the formula: ##STR2## where R.sub.2 to R.sub.9 and R.sub.11 to R.sub.18 are the same or different, and are an alkyl group containing from 1 to 4 carbon atoms, a hydroxyl group, or hydrogen; and R.sub.1 and R.sub.10 are the same or different, and are an alkyl group containing from 1 to 4 carbon atoms, hydrogen, acetyl, phenacyl, or benzyl.
