摘要:
LCD unit includes first and second LCD panels stacked one on another. An image-data processing unit outputs monochrome image data to the second LCD panel, and color image data to the first LCD panel. The monochrome image data specifies a full transmission for a pixel having a luminance not less than a threshold, the original gray-scale level for a pixel having a luminance less than the threshold. The color image data is generated based on the monochrome image data and input image data.

A LCD device includes first and second LCD panels stacked one on another. Each of the first and second LCD panels includes a pair of transparent substrates, a liquid crystal layer sandwiched therebetween, and a pair of polarizing films sandwiching therebetween the pair of transparent substrates. A light diffusion layer having light diffusion function is interposed between the first LCD panel and the second LCD panel. The light diffusion layer reduces the intensity of the light passed by the first LCD panel, thereby alleviating the periodicity of the arrangement of dark areas and bright areas to alleviate the moire caused by light interference.

Within a reflective display section R, a part of a light that reaches a reflective electrode through a color filter exits to the outside through slits and a part of a light that reaches the reflective electrode through the slits exits to the outside through the color filter. In addition, a light reaching the reflective electrode through the color filter and exiting to the outside through the color filter, and a light having no opportunity to pass through the slits also can be observed. Therefore, a mean film thickness of color filter through which all lights pass during the time in which they travel the associated distance after they are inputted to the inside until they are outputted to the outside becomes nearly equal to that could be observed in the transmissive section T.

An in-plane-switching-mode (IPS) LCD device includes a TFT substrate and a CF substrate sandwiching therebetween an LC layer, and a pair of polarizing films sandwiching therebetween the substrates and the LC layer. Each polarizing film has a polarization layer and a protective layer. An optical compensation layer having a birefringence is disposed between the light-emitting-side polarizing film and to the CF substrate. The optical compensation layer has an in-plane retardation of N1 satisfying the following relationship: 83.050−0.810×D1≦N1≦228.090−0.74D1 in the range of 0

An in-plane-switching-mode (IPS) LCD device includes a TFT substrate and a CF substrate sandwiching therebetween a liquid crystal (LC) layer, and a pair of polarizing films sandwiching therebetween the TFT and CF substrates and LC layer. The TFT substrate includes a SiNx insulation layer having a higher refractive index compared to the TFT substrate and LC layer. The thickness (d) of the SiNx layer is expressed by d=(100+170×k)±30 where k is an integer not smaller than zero and not larger than 5. The protective layer of the light-incident-side polarizing film near the insulation film has a thickness larger than zero and not larger than 57 μm.

An LCD device includes an LC panel, and a backlight unit having a backlight source and a luminous intensity control unit. The backlight source has a peak luminous intensity in each of wavelength ranges corresponding to red, green and blue colors. The luminous intensity control unit controls the peak luminous intensity of the wavelength range corresponding to the blue color at a lower gray scale level of the LCD unit to be lower than that at a higher gray scale level, to thereby prevent the chromaticity on the screen from shifting toward blue color.

A normally-white twisted-nematic-mode LCD device has first and second optical compensation films for compensating the retardation of an LC layer sandwiched between a pair of substrates. The LC layer is applied with an applied voltage Vw having a relation with respect to the threshold voltage Vth of the LC and a pre-tilt angle θ of the LC layer, as follows: Vw≦Vth×exp(−0.235×θ+7.36×10−3). By using the applied voltage Vw depending on the pre-tilt angle θ increases the viewing angle which achieves a desired contrast ratio.
