摘要: An irrigation control system is disclosed for controlling the irrigation of horticultural plants or crops grown in containers. The system includes a beam assembly for supporting the plant media system and a load cell for providing an electrical output signal proportional to the load applied to the beam assembly by the plant media system. The load cell is interfaced with a microcomputer which executes a control program of the present invention. The control program reads the signal from the load cell at selected intervals and signals for an irrigation event if the current weight of the plant media system is less than a predetermined base weight. A new predetermined base weight is calculated and reset after each irrigation event. In this way, the system bases the initiation of an irrigation event on real time, short term, differential weight change of the plant media system due to evapotranspiration, while allowing for compensation of weight change effects due to other factors such as fruit set, plant weight, pruning and harvesting.

摘要: An apparatus and method for underwater coupling of a fiber-optic cable to a light source without exposing the light source to the surrounding water. The apparatus employs an optically clear coupling element having one or more blind holes on one surface sized to snugly hold a fiber optic cable. The coupling element closes a watertight enclosure containing a light source such that the blind holes are on the exterior of the enclosure. Light emitted by the light source can pass through the optically clear coupling element to be received by fiber-optic cables fitted into the exterior blind holes. The fiber optic cables can be removed and replaced without opening the enclosure and exposing the light source to contact by the surrounding water.

摘要: A method and system is provided for moving passengers in and out of an amusement ride of the type having a passenger cabin capable of movement in multiple degrees of freedom within an enclosure. The cabin includes ingress doors on one side of the cabin and egress doors on the other side to admit and discharge passengers from seats within the cabin. Another set of ingress and egress doors are provided on opposite sides of the enclosure in respective alignment with the ingress and egress doors of the cabin when the cabin is at rest in a loading position. A plurality of ingress and egress platforms, located outside the operating envelope of the cabin when the cabin is in motion, are adapted to be moved to a deployed position when the cabin is in the loading position to connect the ingress and egress doors of the enclosure with the ingress and egress doors of the cabin. In this way, movement of passengers in and out of the cabin, which is spaced from the enclosure, is provided in a rapid and orderly fashion. Control means in the form of a computer also are included for controlling and coordinating the various movements of the doors, platforms and cabin. Restraints in the passenger seats also can be controlled by the computer so that the amusement ride cannot begin until the restraints in each occupied seat are fastened.

摘要: A method and apparatus for adjusting the optical alignment of a film projection system of the type having a film gate with a central opening, a lens mount having lenses optically aligned along an optical axis of the lens mount, a light source and a generally ellipsoidal collector for reflecting light from the light source along an optical axis of the collector. The method and apparatus utilize a laser light source which is inserted in the position normally occupied by the lenses and a beam splitter which splits the beam of laser light into a center beam and two inclined side beams. An intercept sheet is temporarily placed in the path of the center beam and reflections of the side beams from the interior surface of the collector to create images of the center beam and the reflected side beams on the intercept sheet. By adjustment of the position and tilt of the collector, the images of the center beam and the reflected side beams on the intercept sheet can be brought into coincidence, thereby bringing the optical axes of the collector, the film gate and the lens mount into coincidence with a system optical axis in which the illumination is centered upon the opening through the film gate and distributed evenly over it, with the film gate centered with the optical axis of the projection lens assembly.

摘要: A fog producing apparatus for suspending fine particles of water in air in an economical and reliable manner. Ultrasonic transducers potted in an electrically insulative and liquidproof material are placed in a container in which a predetermined water level is maintained by a float and valve device. Alternatively, the potted transducers are suspended below floats floating on the surface of the water whereby the critical water depth over the transducers is automatically maintained. In addition compressed air is conducted through the emanating fog plumes to provide a more homogeneous and dispersed fog effect. A copious amount of fog can thereby be efficiently and reliably produced to create theatrical or visual effects.

摘要: A pyrotechnic device includes a launcher for launching and igniting a plurality of pyrotechnic stars for creating an aerial fireworks display. The launcher comprises a launching tube having an igniter that ignites the pyrotechnic stars as they are being expelled from the launching tube under the force of pressurized air. The igniter may comprise a section of the launching tube having a locally reduced diameter so that the pyrotechnic star frictionally engages it during launch, causing a striker composition on the interior of the launching tube to ignite a prime composition on the exterior surface of the pyrotechnic star. Alternatively, the igniter may comprise a flame within the launching tube to ignite the prime composition on the star. Various feeding mechanisms are provided to rapidly feed a large number of pyrotechnic stars for launching from the launching tube. The launcher utilizes pressurized air to launch the pyrotechnic stars and, thus, minimizes adverse environmental impact.
