An injection molding nozzle for disposition in a mold. The nozzle is for injecting melt into a cavity of the mold, and includes a body having a through bore extending therethrough for receiving the melt. Attached to the body of the nozzle is a nozzle piece secured to the body that defines an outlet communicating between the body through bore and the cavity gate. A nozzle member surrounds the body at a position upstream of the nozzle piece and has an inner surface contacting the body, and an outer surface contacting the mold. The outer surface forms a seal against melt flow upstream from the nozzle member.

Injection molding apparatus having a number of heated nozzles extending in a row from an elongated heated melt distribution manifold. Each heated nozzle has a pair of mounting flanges extending outwardly in opposite directions adjacent its rear end. Hollow insulating and locating bushings extend forwardly from the mounting flanges to the cooled cavity plate. The combination of the mounting flanges and the insulating and locating bushings accurately locates the heated nozzles very closely together in a row and spaces the heated elongated melt distribution manifold rearwardly from the cooled cavity plate.

A pulley is provided which is capable of being used as an alternator pulley. The pulley has a central hub portion for connecting the pulley to a shaft and a belt engaging portion disposed radially outward from the central hub portion. The central hub portion and the belt engaging portion are injection molded from a thermoplastic polyphenylene sulfide polymer material. The pulley provides approximately a 75% weight reduction in comparison to conventional metal pulleys used in automotive applications. The pulley is injection molded having a sprue gate located substantially in a center of said central hub portion. A bushing is optionally provided in a center opening in said central hub portion.

A modular injection nozzle system for use with hot runner injection machines employs a thermal insulating element between the tip of the injection nozzle and a removable mold gate insert. This thermal insulating element limits the heat loss from the tip to the gate insert, assists in sealing the gate area and provides assistance in aligning the gate and the nozzle during assembly. The removable mold gate insert allows for eased servicing and assembling/dis-assembling of the injection nozzle system and has limited contact with the mold plate. In one embodiment, the removable gate insert is mounted to the nozzle via the insulating member, which is in the form of a sleeve with exterior threads which are complementary to interior threads on the gate insert. The sleeve can either be press-fit onto the nozzle or can have interior threads which are complementary to exterior threads on the nozzle. In either case, the sleeve can assist in the alignment of the components of the nozzle system. In another embodiment, the insulating element also includes an gap between the nozzle tip and the gate insert, the gap having a suitable insulating gas or vacuum therein to provide additional insulation. In another embodiment, the insulating element comprises a layer of insulating material on the nozzle tip and the gate insert can either be press fit with the layer or the layer can have exterior threads can into it to engage complementary threads on the gate insert. In another embodiment, the insulating element is molded in place on the nozzle tip.

Injection molding apparatus with a guide and sealing ring mounted around the front end of a heated nozzle. The stainless steel ring fits around the nozzle and has fingers which are bent over the front end of the nozzle to hold it in place. A thermocouple element extends through a groove in the ring and is bent into a hole in the front end of the nozzle. One of the fingers is bent over the thermocouple element to hold it in place. The outer surface of the ring has a circumferential beveled surface leading to a ridge which guides the nozzle into place during insertion and provides a secondary seal against melt leakage. A number of rearwardly extending fingers have notches to receive a wire wound around the nozzle to hold the thermocouple element and the ring itself in place.

In an injection molding apparatus in which first and second mold parts are combined to define therebetween an insulated section of a runner system through which molten plastic material is injected into at least one mold cavity, spring-biased plungers are included in at least one of the first and second mold parts for restraining a shell of plastic material within at least a part of the insulated section of the runner system from contacting any portion of at least one of the mold parts within the insulated section of the runner system other than the plungers when the first and second mold parts are separated from one another.

A temperature and molding material pressure compensated probe for use in injection molding apparatus. The probe includes a two-part telescoping body with a molding material filled space therebetween. Longitudinal thermal expansion which formerly presented sealing problems only results in changes in the extent of telescoping overlap. Molding material pressure is applied equally to both probe parts tending to improve sealing. The molding material filled space has a greater transverse area than all outlets and passages.

An injection molding nozzle with an elongated body removably seated in a one-piece outer collar. The outer collar has a circular insulation flange which seats in the mold to locate the nozzle. The elongated body has an electrical heating element coiled around a central melt channel. Terminal portions of the heating element extend outwardly through a U-shaped opening in the outer collar into a ceramic connector. The connector is secured in place by an inner lip which slides into a groove around the U-shaped opening.

A system and apparatus for injection molding articles of crystallizable polymeric materials in a substantially completely amorphous state is provided. The system includes (i) a mold defining an article formation cavity and an outer cavity connected by a gate, (ii) a melt transport mechanism including a bushing having a distal portion located in the outer cavity in close proximity to the gate inlet, and (iii) a source of molten material. The geometric configurations of the distal portion of the bushing, the inner portion of the outer cavity and the gate, and the relative locations of the distal end of the bushing and the inlet of the gate are each selected such that melt material may flow from the source through the melt transport mechanism and gate into the article formation cavity. The melt transport mechanism is maintained at a temperature above the characteristic crystal melt temperature of the polymeric material. The mold temperature is maintained well below the minimum characteristic glass transition temperature of the polymeric material. Further, the geometric configuration of the elements is selected such that the vestige which protrudes from the completed article has a minimum length, and such that during the interval between successive cycles only a small volume of melt located between the discharge orifice of the bushing and the outlet of the gate is allowed to crystallize.

A method of injection molding multi-ply products includes the step of forming an insulating barrier layer from one of different plastic materials used to injection mold multi-ply products, between an injection cavity mold and each of hot-runner nozzles, prior to the injection mold. The insulating barrier layer is formed by pre-charging one of the plastic materials which is the best thermostability into a recess formed in the hot-runner nozzle at its surface contacted by the injection cavity mold, the recess communicating with the exit port of the hot-runner nozzle. The plastic material charged in the recess is cooled and solidified by the injection cavity mold. The insulating barrier layer formed by the solidified plastic material is less thermally deteriorated by heat from a hot-runner mold for a prolonged time period. The heat-insulating property of the insulating barrier layer can be assured during a continuous injection molding process over a week.
