Further, in a period after the vehicle turns right or left, determination responsiveness with regard to determination whether or the ambient environment is a urban area or a non-urban area is enhanced than that in a period other than the period after the right or left turn.

Provided is a light distribution control system for vehicle in which each of left and right head lamp housings is provided with camera that picks up image of the forward area of vehicle, main lamp unit that forms basic light distribution pattern which is symmetric at the forward area of the vehicle, first sub lamp unit that forms first additional light distribution pattern at lateral side of the vehicle as compared to the basic light distribution pattern, second sub lamp unit that forms second additional light distribution pattern at lateral side of the vehicle, and control unit that controls the turning-ON/OFF of the first and second sub lamp units based on the image data of the camera. The control unit may form non-symmetric light distribution pattern as a whole at the forward area of the vehicle according to road environment.

At least one bright spot, or blob, is found that stands out from a dark background of the external environment within each frame of the multiplicity of images. A multiplicity of features is extracted from a found blob. A type is recognized of a found blob that is selected from a multiplicity of types of blobs. A determination is then made whether to turn on a high beam light or a low beam light based at least on the recognized type of the found blob and a set of rules. Finally, an action based on such decision is performed.

The recognition limit unit estimates a recognition limit luminance, in the visual object range, based on at least the adaptation luminance. The visual object recognition unit determines whether the visual object luminance is less than the recognition limit luminance. The light distribution control unit controls a light distribution of a headlamp unit such that the visual object luminance is included in a range of the recognition limit luminance, if the visual object luminance is less than the recognition limit luminance.

The processing unit performs the map switchover when the steering angle is changed to outside a predetermined angular range around a neutral angular position of the steering wheel.
