To prevent splatter of oil from a traverse spiral drum upon rapid rotation of the drum in high-speed spooling machines, an oil retention plate is provided extending parallel to the axis of the drum and having an oil wiping edge engaging the surface thereof, the drum being located in advance -- with respect to rotation of the drum -- of the position of the slider block engaged in a spiral groove of the rotating drum to provide for the traverse movement, the plate being of sufficient width to block spray of oil centrifugally thrown off the surface of the drum upon rotation thereof, a bead of oil being formed at the engagement edge of the drum and the plate, the bead penetrating the spiral groove in the drum to provide, due to the rotation of the drum, lubrication of the lateral surfaces of the groove and hence lubrication for the slider block while preventing contact of lubricating oil with the yarn being spooled.

Disclosed herein is mechanism for lubricating the traverse portion of winding apparatus. The lubricating mechanism includes an atomizing system for introducing an oil mist into a housing which generally encloses a traverse cam mounted for rotation on suitable bearings within the housing. The oil mist is effective to lubricate the various parts of the traverse system notwithstanding that the traverse cam may be rotating at speeds of 7,000 r.p.m. and higher. The housing enclosing the traverse cam is provided with a slot through which a strand guide, attached to a cam follower, projects. The cam follower is engaged in an endless groove in the traverse cam and as the traverse cam is rotated the guide is reciprocated from end to end of the traverse cam groove and is thus operable to distribute an advancing strand with which it is engaged onto a rotating package. The oil mist is precluded from escaping through the slot in the housing by means of an impeller which operates to create a zone of negative pressure within the traverse cam housing. By such construction the oil mist is drawn to a sump area within the housing and directionally away from the traverse slot. Thus, effective lubrication of the traverse mechanism and associated parts is achieved while any substantial escape of the oil mist through the traverse slot is precluded.

A traversing thread guide for winding a thread, comprising an elongated cam engaging portion which meshes with a helically extending endless cam groove of a traverse cylinder. A gliding member for linear to-and-fro guiding of the traversing thread guide along a rigid guide device extends parallel to the rotational axis of the traverse cylinder, said guiding member being arranged offset with respect to the center of the cam engaging portion. A thread guide member is rigidly arranged on the gliding member. The cam engaging portion comprises a base for inner radial guidance of the traversing thread guide, said base being provided with a curvature which at least approximates the curvature of the cam groove base or bottom and comprises an upper surface designed for outer radial guidance of the thread guide on an inside surface of the extended guide device. The gliding member which is rigidly connected with the cam engaging portion is provided with at least one gliding section for contacting a guide edge of the extended guide device, and which gliding section encloses an angle with the upper surface of the cam engaging portion.

An improved traverse device of a winding apparatus for simultaneously taking-up a plurality of threads so as to simultaneously form a plurality of thread packages, the traverse device provided with a common traverse cam for creating traverse guide motion of a plurality of thread guides which are slidably mounted on a guide rail means disposed in parallel condition to a longitudinal axis of the traverse cam. An axially inside portion of each of said endless guide grooves is connected to said ring shaped guide groove by way of an auxiliary guide groove formed on the cylindrical surface of said traverse cam. The guide rail means is provided with a cut-out portion at a position facing the ring shaped guide groove. Each thread guide is slidably engaged with one of the above-mentioned endless guide grooves separately.

A double cam groove roll for imparting a traverse movement to a yarn guide has grooves that meet at their ends at substantially the same angle at which they cross elsewhere. The cam groove follower has a pivotal mounting and is of elongated form with rounded ends. The outer surfaces of the grooves where they run into each other are flared to provide a partial cup surface into which one end of the follower will seat and swing in that seat as a socket, while the opposite inner surfaces of the grooves are flared out to form a concave surface opposite said cup surface adapted to permit the other end of the follower to flop quickly over against the outer surface of the in-running groove. The cup or socket surface may be a spring loaded replaceable insert and the cam groove follower may have spring loaded end pieces seated in an intermediate pivotal body.
