Methodologies and equipment for using a hypochlorite solution to remove menstrual fluid, underarm perspiration or other hard-to-remove stains from soft fabric articles with reduced damage to the fabric articles when compared with popular chlorine bleaches. The soft fabric articles preferably are in white, although the present invention can also be applied to articles in other colors. In one embodiment, the weight concentration ratio of the alkali metal hydroxide over the hypchlorite salt in the hypochlorite solution is no less than 1:12.5. The hypochlorite solution may contain at least 0.2% by weight of sodium hydroxide and/or have a pH of at least 11.8.

Porous, permeable particles of meta-aramid can be chlorinated or brominated to produce antimicrobial and detoxifying particles for use in applications such as, but not limited to, nonwoven webs, paper, textiles, absorbent articles, healthcare products, paints, filter materials, powder coatings, clear coatings, molded plastic articles, binders for fibrous materials, and the like. The particles can be charged with halogen before or after incorporation into the application medium. The particles can contain blends of meta-aramid with other polymers such as, but not limited to, cellulose, cellulose acetate, polyurethane, and the like. The particles will be effective at inactivation of pathogenic and odor-causing microorganisms and toxic chemical agents. The particles, which contain N-halamine units, have unexpected resistance to ultraviolet light degradation.

A process for treating fabric and particularly indigo dyed fabric to change its color to a desired shade or cast contacts the fabric with an aqueous solution containing a chlorine-providing compound and an amount of a bromide salt and/or iodide salt. The desired shade of the bleached fabric can be controlled by adjusting the ratio of the bromide salt or iodide salt in relation to the concentration of the chlorine providing compound and the pH of the aqueous solution. In one embodiment, the chlorine-providing compound is sodium hypochlorite and the salt is sodium bromide, potassium bromide, sodium iodide, potassium iodide and mixtures thereof. The salt in combination with the sodium hypochlorite produces a gray cast to the fabric and particularly indigo dyed denim compared to the blue cast of conventional hypochlorite bleaching and reduces the amount of the hypochlorite bleach normally required to attain the desired shade.

An alkyl gycol ether having the following formula wherein R is a C1–C7 saturated, unsaturated, straight-chain or branched, acyclic or cyclic alkyl group, is useful as a fragrance material in perfumes, cosmetics, consumer products, and the like. When R is a saturated, straight-chain or branched, acyclic or cyclic alkyl group, these compounds are especially stable when used as fragrance materials in bleach containing products.

A recycling process for liquid treatment of denim scrap comprising placing denim scrap on a support surface to form a thickness of flat, layered denim scrap. To the top surface is applied a compression plate to form the thickness of denim scrap into a compact cake. Then treatment liquid is passed through the interior of the compact cake in a direction parallel to the surfaces of the scrap, the liquid passing between opposed surfaces of the denim pieces. The denim scrap is preferably cut into relatively uniform sizes having their largest dimension less than about 4 inches. The treatment liquid can be a solvent for oxidized indigo dye, whereby indigo dye is removed from the denim scrap by said liquid; an aqueous solution containing a desizing agent, whereby size is removed from the denim scrap pieces; an aqueous solution containing a reducing agent for indigo dye, whereby dye in the denim pieces is reduced to a soluble, leuco form, dissolves in the solution, and both size and dye are removed from the denim scrap pieces; a solution containing desizing and reducing agent, whereby size and dye is removed from the denim scrap pieces; or an aqueous solution containing a reducing agent for indigo dye, whereby dye in the denim pieces is reduced to a soluble, reduced form, dissolves in the solution, and is removed from the denim scrap pieces; or a sequences of these liquids.
