To provide an improved non-additive mixer, a first mixer mixes first and second video signals according to a mixer control signal derived in a new way. The first and second video signals are applied, respectively, to first and second chrominance (blocking) filters. The resulting first and second luminance signals are applied, respectively, to first and second summing circuits, where offsets may be applied to either or both of them. The difference is then taken between the first offset luminance signal and the second offset luminance signal to produce a difference luminance signal. The difference luminance signal is then multiplied by a gain control signal to produce the mixer control signal. The mixer control signal can also be used to control a second mixer, thereby providing a channel for keying information that is non-additively mixed according to the luminance content of the video signal that the key information is associated with.

The first picture has a depth of field which is greater than the second picture. Subsequently the high frequency components are extracted from each of the pictures in order to reflect characteristics of each of the pictures which have the greatest amount of contrast or sharpness. The two high frequency signals are compared in order to obtain a depth of field signal based upon the differences between the two signals.

In a video mixer each input video signal is modified by only a single multiplier before its contribution is added to the contributions of other input video signals to produce the output video signal. The sums of the contributions of the video signals which participate at any time in the output signal corresponds to a predetermined value for the overall amplitude range. The mixing factor signals supplied to each of the mixers which are in line with the inputs are generated by two priority cascades of subtracters, multipliers and adders, each of which provides for the composition of an output picture, up to six video input signals and a switching system permits allocating priorities between the inputs in any desired way on a permanent or variable basis. The two separate cascades of control signals are connectable through the in line multipliers in such a way that a composite output picture made up of up to 6 input video signals can be faded over to another composite input signal likewise made up of up to 6 or more input video signals, not all of which need to be different on both sides of the fade. One cascade can be used to prepare the next composite picture and additional switching make possible the preview of the next composite picture on a preview monitor before that next picture is faded in.

First and second memories are provided for receiving key signals which control a display to output a video composition made up of a plurality of video signals. The key signals are received from a key signal generator in synchronism with the speed of the key signal generator. The first memory receives a key signal directly, while the second memory receives a gated key signal for storing a key signal related to, for example, a still image, and the gating is controlled so that the key signal in the second memory is only overwritten when it is expressly intended to do so. A read address generator controls the reading out of key signals from both memories, in synchronism with the speed of the display apparatus which displays the video images. Another aspect of the invention relates to a system comprising a plurality of first memories for receiving, storing, and outputting a plurality of key signals, respectively. A selector is provided for selecting one of the plurality of output key signals, and the selected key signal is received and stored in a second memory and outputted as a second output key signal. A priority order setting system selects and outputs the first output key signals from the first memory and the second output key signal from the second memory according to a first priority order. A second priority order setting system may select and output the first output key signals according to a second priority order.
