Abstract:
THE PRESENT INVENTION RELATES TO CERTAIN PROCESSES AND COMPOSITIONS USEFUL FOR INHIBITING AND/OR CONTROLLING THE GROWTH OF SLIME IN WATER AND, IN PARTICULAR, WATER EMPLOYED FOR INDUSTRIAL PURPOSES. WATER EMPLOYED IN THE MANUFATURE OF PULP PAPER AND WATER EMPLOYED IN COOLING WATER SYSTEM AS WELL AS OTHER INDUSTRIAL WATERS, PROVIDE ENVIRONMENTS WHICH ARE CONDUCTIVE TO SLIME FORMATION. THE NOVEL COMPOSITIONS OF THE PRESENT INVENTION ARE MIXTURES WHICH SHOW UNEXPECTED SYNEGISTIC ACTIVITY AGAINST MICROORGANISM, INCUDING BACTERIA, FUNGI AND ALGAE, WHICH PRODUCE SLIME IN AQUEOUS SYSTEMS. THE SLIME, OF COURSE IS OBJECTIONABLE FROM AN OPERATIONAL AND/OR AN AESTHETIC POINT OF VIEW. SPECIFICALLY, THE INVENTION IS DIRECTED TO AND THE USE OF COMPOSITIONS COMPRISING A COMBINATION OF 3,3,4,4 - TETRACHLOROTETAHYDROTHIOPHENE - 1,1 - DIOXIDE AND ORGANO - BROMINE COMPOUNDS (OR MIXTURE THEREOF). THE INVENTIVE COMPOSITIONS INHIBIT THE GROWTH OF SLIME IN WATER, OR MORE SPECIFICALLY, POSSESS BIOCIDAL ACTIVITY AGAINST BACTERIA FUNGI AND/OR ALGAE. THE ORANGO-BROMINE COMPOUNDS CONTEMPLATED FOR USE IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE PRESENT INVENTION MAY BE EXEMPLIFIED BY: BIS - 1,4 - BROMOACETOX - 2 - BUTENEE; ALPHA-BROMO-PMETHYLACETOPHENONE AND BETA-BROMO-BETA-NITROSTYRENE.
Abstract:
The present invention relates to certain processes and compositions useful for inhibiting and/or controlling the growth of slime in water and, in particular, water employed for industrial purposes. Water employed in the manufacture of pulp paper and water employed in cooling water systems, as well as other industrial waters, provide environments which are conducive to slime formation. The novel compositions of the present invention are mixtures which show unexpected synergistic activity against microorganisms, including bacteria, fungi and algae, which produce slime in aqueous systems. The slime, of course, is objectionable from an operational and/or an aesthetic point of view. Specifically, the invention is directed to and the use of compositions comprising a combination of 3,3,4,4,tetrachlorotetrahydrothiophene-1,1-dioxide and anionic sulfonate surfactants (or mixtures thereof). The inventive compositions inhibit the growth of slime in water, or more specifically, possess biocidal activity against bacteria, fungi and/or algae. The anionic sulfonate surfactants contemplated for use in accordance with the present invention may be exemplified by: alkali metal linear alkylate sulfonate, wherein the alkylate contains from 10 to 18 carbon atoms; and alkali metal-N-lower alkyl-N-high alkenoyl taurate, wherein the lower alkyl contains from 1 to 4 carbon atoms and the alkenoyl contains from 16 to 20 carbon atoms.

The inventive compositions inhibit the growth of slime in water, or more specifically, possess biocidal activity against bacteria, fungi and/or algae. The derivatives contemplated for use in accordance with the present invention are those which possess the capacity to kill or inhibit the growth of slime-forming microorganisms such as bacteria, fungi and algae.
Abstract:
The present invention relates to certain processes and compositions useful for inhibiting the growth of slime in water and, in particular, water used for industrial purposes; for example, in the manufacture of pulp paper, in the manufacture of paper, in cooling water systems and in effluent water treatment. The novel processes and compositions of the present invention are processes or mixtures which show unexpected synergistic activity against microorganisms, including bacteria, fungi, and algae, which produce slime in aqueous systems or bodies which are objectionable from either an operational or aesthetic point of view. Specifically, the invention is directed to the use of compositions comprising a combination 1,3-dichloroacetone oxime acetate and 2,2-dibromo-3-nitrilopropionamide.

Abstract:
The present disclosure is directed to polymers and copolymers of acrylamido-sulfonic acid compounds and their use basically as dispersants for particles contained in aqueous systems. Exemplary of the sulfonic acid compound is 2-acrylamido-2-methylpropane sulfonic acid, or water-soluble salt thereof; and representative of the co-monomers which the acid is copolymerized with can be mentioned, acrylic acid and derivatives thereof, acrylamide and derivatives thereof, vinyl pyrrolidone, etc. The polymers and copolymers are specifically useful in dispersing water-insoluble compounds of iron, calcium, magnesium and aluminum and such commonly occurring particles of slit and clay.
