    摘要: A surge suppression system for dampening surge pressures or pipe hammer by introducing a gas into a flow conduit in such an amount that the introduced gas is in excess of that required to saturate the liquid. Preferably, the gases are those which are relatively inert or not unduly reactive and which possess relatively low saturation levels with respect to the liquid. Desirably, the gas is added through a member to the flow conduit in a vicinity of high turbulence. The surge suppression system can be utilized in generally any liquid system and particularly in a liquid transmission system.Another embodiment pertains to a scrubber or washer for generally purifying gases and may contain one or two stages to efficiently remove impurities as through the use of high solubility fluids, fluids which decompose contaminants or which contain or provide (i.e. heating stage) catalysts to decompose contaminants, oxidizing agents, or reducing agents. The scrubber contains a packed bed and the packing may be characterized as one where the inside hydraulic radius equals the hydraulic radius of the external flow channels. The washer or scrubber type apparatus is particularly suitable for treating (purifying) materials such as ozone utilized in a deodorizing or disinfecting system.Another embodiment pertains to the purification of a gas by treatment with a fluid in a flow conduit having a plug flow at its entrance containing an injection-mixing device coacting with a first high turbulence causing device and a downstream or second high turbulence causing device. The treating fluid is preferably added at the vena contracta of the first high turbulence causing device.

    摘要: An apparatus for feeding substantially uniform amounts of a chemical into a liquid stream having an irregular flow pattern. In accordance with an embodiment of the present invention there is provided a holding tank having an inlet port for receiving a liquid stream, such as the effluent of a septic system. The tank has an aperture located at a relatively high position in a side wall thereof. A siphon means is provided and comprises an inverted U-shaped section of pipe passing through the aperture and having an inner leg which extends to a position near the bottom of the tank. The siphon means also has an outer leg which extends to a position substantially below the bottom of the tank. Chemical feeding means, preferably in the form of an erosion feeder, are coupled to the outer pipe leg of the siphon means. The feeding means contains a supply of the chemical additive and is operative to feed the chemical into the liquid discharged from the outer leg. In the preferred embodiment of the invention, undesirable dripping is minimized by coupling the outer leg to the chemical feed means via a pipe having a substantially smaller diameter than the diameter of the outer leg. In this embodiment, an erosion feeder is coupled to the outer leg by a coupling pipe and also by a relatively small diameter tubing. The erosion feeder is adapted to dissolve the chemical in the liquid which flows through the tubing and merge the resultant solution with the liquid which flows through the coupling pipe. In operation, the effluent will accumulate in the tank until a predetermined level is reached whereupon the siphon means will operate to cause a substantially uniform flow rate to the erosion feeder. In this manner, the erosion feeder can feed the chemical, typically in solid form, at a substantially uniform rate. When the tank has been discharged, the flow stops abruptly and no further chemicals are added. Thus it is seen that the system attains control of chemical feed without requiring a complex sensing or pumping system or any companion control system.

    摘要: An improved method for treating liquids by disinfection and clarification which includes a means to mix and maintain consistency of the flow in a generally uniform composition prior to and during treatment. The mixture being connected to a section of conduit arranged in a pattern in a target area of a microwave generator so that all matter in the flow is exposed and excited by the electro-magnetic energy for a predetermined period of time and a control means to regulate flow of the mixture so as to allow flow only when mixture is treated, to a prescribed level. The method includes an automatic means to sense degree of treatment and to increase or decrease flow, as required, to maintain uniformity of treatment. Disposable filter means is provided when removal of undesirable contaminents is required.

    摘要: Carboxylated lactones of the general formula ##EQU1## wherein R.sup.1 and R.sup.2 are individually selected from hydrogen, hydroxy, alkyl, hydroxyalkyl, --COOM, --CHOHCOOM, --CH.sub.2 COOM and a 1,3-dioxolane, 5-oxo group, and R.sup.3 is selected from hydrogen and --COOM, wherein M is hydrogen, alkali metal, ammonium or alkylammonium, provided that at least one of R.sup.1, R.sup.2 and R.sup.3 contain a carboxyl group, are disclosed as inhibiting the corrosion of metals by oxygen-bearing waters. The carboxylated lactones can be employed either alone or in combination with thiols, 1,2,3-triazoles, zinc salts, chromates, silicates, inorganic phosphates, molybdates, tannins, lignins, lignin sulfonates, calcium and magnesium salts and mixtures thereof.

    摘要: A demand bactericide for disinfecting water comprises a strong base anion exchange resin containing a bactericidally effective amount of triiodide for killing bacteria in water while being essentially free of water-elutable oxidizing iodine. The invention also extends to the process of preparing the demand bactericide wherein the resin-triiodide complex is washed with water until the wash water gives a negative test for oxidizing iodine, the resin preferably being a quaternary ammonium resin which is first reacted with an alkylating agent to eliminate residual amine groups.

    摘要: The present invention relates to certain processes and compositions useful for inhibiting the growth of slime in water and, in particular, water used for industrial purposes; for example, in the manufacture of pulp paper, in the manufacture of paper, in cooling water systems and in effluent water treatment. The novel processes and compositions of the present invention are processes or mixtures which show unexpected synergistic activity against microorganisms, including bacteria, fungi, and algae, which produce slime in aqueous systems or bodies which are objectionable from either an operational or aesthetic point of view. Specifically, the invention is directed to the use of compositions comprising a combination of 2, 2 -Dibromo - 3 nitrilopropionamide and t-butylhydroperoxide.
