Abstract: Systems and methods for control of the delivery of contaminates are provided. A conveyor moves contaminate particles from a hopper into an airflow. The contents of a hopper at multiple time points within a sliding window of time are weighted with a scale. A processor applies linear regression to a data set comprising the time points as an independent variable and the weight measurements as a dependent variable, resulting in a determination of a line fitting the data set. A processor determines a current mass flow rate of the contaminate particles from the slope of the line. The processor determines an estimated change in the conveyor motor speed needed to achieve the target mass flow rate, the estimated change determined from a predetermined mapping of flow rates to motor speeds, the estimated change based on the current mass flow rate, the target mass flow rate, and a predetermined fraction.

Abstract: A fluid valve is provided including an inner shell and an outer shell. The inner shell includes a sidewall having a first opening and an interior surface defining an inner chamber. The outer shell includes a sidewall having a second opening and an exterior surface defining an outer chamber. The inner shell is positioned within the outer shell and the inner shell is movable relative to the outer chamber between a first position and a second position by a change in fluid conditions of a fluid supplied to the fluid valve. The first opening and the second opening overlap to define a passageway extending from the interior surface of the inner shell to the exterior surface of the outer shell. Relative movement of the inner shell from the first position toward the second position reduces a cross-sectional area of the passageway.

Abstract: A method may include cold spraying a masking material on selected locations of a component to form a masking layer, wherein the masking material comprises a metal or alloy; additively manufacturing an additively manufactured portion of the component at locations at which the masking layer is not present; and removing the masking layer from the component. The masking layer may be configured to protect portions of the component by covering or otherwise providing a physical barrier that reduces or prevents material from adhering to unwanted portions of the component during a subsequent manufacturing and/or repair technique. Additionally, the masking layer may be reflective to infrared radiation and/or intimately contact the component and function as a heat sink or thermally conductive layer to transfer heat from the component.

Abstract: An electric starter-generator is described. The generator may comprise a rotor, a housing, two bearings, a stator, and a cooling-fluid flowpath. The cooling-fluid flowpath may comprise a cooling-fluid entrance and exit, and a cooling-fluid channel in fluid communication with the entrance and exit. At least a portion of the channel may be defined by a fluid-tight coupling of the housing and a sleeve radially surrounding the outer race of either the bearings. The portion may form an annulus about the axis. The portion may comprise a radially inner surface defined by the sleeve, a radially outer surface define by said housing, and two axial surfaces. The two axial surfaces may extend a distance from the radially inner to outer surfaces that is less than a distance from one of the two axial surfaces to the other of the two axial surfaces.

Abstract: Systems and methods are presented for acoustic dampening in a rotating machine. The rotating machine has a rotatable shaft defining an axis of rotation and a gas flowpath. A system comprises an acoustic panel affixed to an annular casing. The acoustic panel comprises an acoustic treatment member extending between a radially inner skin and radially outer skin. The radially inner skin extends the full axial and circumferential dimensions of the acoustic panel, and the acoustic treatment member overlays the entirety of the radially inner skin. The acoustic panel is positioned so that the radially outer skin abuts the casing, the abutting surfaces being configured to effect relative axial movement between the surfaces while maintaining contact between the surfaces. The acoustic panel is affixed in position to the casing by one or more fasteners passing through the casing and a portion of the radially outer skin.

Abstract: A method may include removing a portion of a base component adjacent to a damaged portion of the base component to define a repair portion of the base component. The base component may include a cobalt- or nickel-based superalloy, and the repair portion of the base component may include a through-hole extending from a first surface of the base component to a second surface of the base component. The method also may include forming a braze sintered preform to substantially reproduce a shape of the through-hole. The braze sintered preform may include a Ni- or Co-based alloy. The method additionally may include placing the braze sintered preform in the through-hole and heating at least the braze sintered preform to cause the braze sintered preform to join to the repair portion of the base component and change a microstructure of the braze sintered preform to a brazed and diffused microstructure.
