Abstract: The disclosure describes composite nosecones and techniques for forming composite nosecones including a matrix material, relatively higher-modulus reinforcement elements, and relatively tougher polymer-based reinforcement elements. An example composite nosecone includes a body substantially symmetrical around a central axis. The body includes a side wall defining a diameter of the body that increases from a forward side of the body to an aft side of the body. The body includes a composite material including a plurality of relatively higher-modulus reinforcement elements, a plurality of relatively tougher polymer-based reinforcement elements, and a matrix material substantially encapsulating the plurality of relatively higher-modulus reinforcement elements and the plurality of relatively tougher polymer-based reinforcement elements. The plurality of relatively higher-modulus reinforcement elements are different from the plurality of relatively tougher polymer-based reinforcement elements.

Abstract: Systems and methods are presented for dampening noise in a rotating machine having a rotatable shaft defining an axis of rotation. An acoustic panel assembly may comprise an annular casing, a hook, and an acoustic panel carried by the hook. The acoustic panel comprises a radially inner skin, a radially outer skin, and an acoustic treatment member having a plurality of walls extending between the radially inner skin and the radially outer skin thereby defining a plurality of radially oriented cells. A portion of the cells adjacent a first axial edge of the acoustic panel are filled with a reinforcement material and shaped to form a lip having sufficient strength to support a portion of the acoustic panel. The panel is positioned so that the lip is axially and radially retained by the hook.

Abstract: Systems and methods are presented for acoustic dampening in a rotating machine. The rotating machine has a rotatable shaft defining an axis of rotation and a gas flowpath. A system comprises an acoustic panel affixed to an annular casing. The acoustic panel comprises an acoustic treatment member extending between a radially inner skin and radially outer skin. The radially inner skin extends the full axial and circumferential dimensions of the acoustic panel, and the acoustic treatment member overlays the entirety of the radially inner skin. The acoustic panel is positioned so that the radially outer skin abuts the casing, the abutting surfaces being configured to effect relative axial movement between the surfaces while maintaining contact between the surfaces. The acoustic panel is affixed in position to the casing by one or more fasteners passing through the casing and a portion of the radially outer skin.

Abstract: A composite aerofoil may include an aerofoil body defining a leading edge and a trailing edge, wherein the body comprises a composite material including a plurality of relatively higher-modulus reinforcement elements, a plurality of relatively tougher polymer-based reinforcement elements, and a matrix material substantially encapsulating the plurality of relatively higher-modulus reinforcement elements and the plurality of relatively tougher polymer-based reinforcement elements. The plurality of relatively higher-modulus reinforcement elements are different from the plurality of relatively tougher polymer-based reinforcement elements. The disclosure also describes techniques for forming composite aerofoils.

Abstract: A containment assembly is disclosed for a turbofan engine. The containment assembly comprises a forward fence, an aft fence, a fan track liner, an intermediate casing member, an outer casing member, and an annular nesting cavity. The fan track liner is disposed axially between the forward and aft fences. The intermediate casing member is disposed radially outward of at least a portion of the fan track liner. The outer casing member is disposed radially outward of at least a portion of the intermediate member. The annular nesting cavity is bounded at least in part by the intermediate casing member and the outer casing member.

The locating structure further includes a locating feature indicating a particular location of the fan casing when the locating structure is mounted to the fan casing.

The plurality of relatively tough polymer-based reinforcement elements and the plurality of second reinforcement elements are embedded in the matrix material.
