Abstract: In an example, a monitoring method for screening an individual, the monitoring method comprising: performing a pre-checkpoint monitoring of a stance of the individual as the individual's stance to collect baseline data including weight distribution and balance of the individual as the individual's weight distribution and balance; performing a pre-scanning monitoring of the individual's stance at a scanning system at a checkpoint to collect pre-scanning monitoring data prior to scanning the individual by the scanning system; and comparing the pre-scanning monitoring data with the baseline data to determine whether the pre-scanning monitoring data falls below a pre-scanning threshold with respect to the baseline data, the individual resetting the individual's stance at the scanning system until the pre-scanning monitoring data is below the pre-scanning threshold with respect to the baseline data before scanning the individual at the scanning system.

Abstract: In an example, a system to modify a severe weather vortex comprises a controller configured to specify initial conditions for formation of the severe weather vortex, model the severe weather vortex with equations of fluid dynamics based on the initial conditions to produce a simulated severe weather vortex, and computationally add energy to a vortex generation area at an upper part of the simulated severe weather vortex to modify the simulated severe weather vortex to disrupt at least one of the formation or a travel path of the simulated severe weather vortex. A steerable mirror is oriented to focus solar energy from the sun at a vortex generation area at an upper part of the severe weather vortex based on the energy computationally added to modify the simulated severe weather vortex.

Abstract: An example method to characterize an anomaly includes obtaining information about an item using a first mode scan and detecting whether the item contains an anomaly based on the information. The method further includes determining, responsive to detecting the anomaly, an area of interest of the item corresponding to a location of the anomaly, and determining a strategy including a procedure to obtain other information of the area of interest. The method refines a characterization of the anomaly based on the other information, and compares the characterization of the anomaly to a predetermined criterion. The method iteratively revises the strategy to perform additional available procedures, to further refine the characterization of the anomaly. When the characterization of the anomaly meets the predetermined criterion corresponding to a prohibited item, the method identifies the anomaly as prohibited.

Abstract: A substrate is printed with front side and back side markings. The front side when viewed with reflected light includes a first marking printed with a first gradient of a first color with increasing intensity from a first edge of the substrate to a second edge of the substrate. The back side when viewed with reflected light includes a second marking printed with a second gradient of the first color with decreasing intensity from the first edge of the substrate to the second edge of the substrate. The first gradient and the second gradient are selected for a combination of the first marking and the second marking, when viewed from the front side with transmitted light, to be seen with a same intensity of the first color at the first edge and the second edge.

Abstract: A media holder can be used for preparing samples. The media holder can comprise a base, a pair of walls extending upwardly from the base, and a plurality of transverse members positioned on and coupled to a respective upper end of each of the walls. Each of the transverse members can define a receiving slot for receiving at least a portion of a media therein.

Abstract: A system and method for securely exchanging information between a server and an endpoint. A firewall and switch may administer connections between the endpoint and the server. The network interface of the server may send and receive information through the firewall and switch. A program task in the sever may set the network interface to be in an “on state” for a predetermined amount of time on a specific date thereby creating an active time transfer window that the network interface can receive communications from the endpoint.

Abstract: Systems and methods of detecting a vortex made by a travelling object is disclosed. Techniques include positioning a media collector to capture a visual media file of the vortex. In some configurations, a graphic recognition algorithm and vortex similarity engine are used to determine whether a visual media file captured by a media collector contains a vortex. In some configurations, a computer may trigger an alert if a travelling object vortex is not expected to be in the visual media file.
