摘要: Reconfigurable containers which may adopt two stable configurations are described. In the first configuration, the container is suitable for the storing and transport of goods. When in a second, collapsed configuration, the container occupies a lesser volume than the first configuration and thus requires less shipping space. This is accomplished through the use of at least one deformable active material member that is preferably a shape memory polymer and, optionally, releasable fasteners.

Suitable active materials include shape memory materials such as shape memory alloys, ferromagnetic shape memory alloys, and shape memory polymers (SMP). A second class of active materials include materials that exhibit a change in at least one attribute when subjected to an applied field but revert back to their original state upon removal of the applied field. Active materials in this category include piezoelectric materials, electroactive polymers (EAP), magnetorheological polymers, and the like.

摘要: Method and apparatus is provided for monitoring the installation of a blind rivet to attach together top and bottom members. The blind rivet installation tool includes a housing having an anvil seated on the rivet head. A collet is reciprocable within the tool housing and carries jaws for gripping the mandrel of the blind rivet. Retraction of the jaws by the collet displaces the jaws and the mandrel axially and causes the mandrel head to axially collapse and radially expand the hollow shank of the blind rivet into engagement with the bottom member so that the rivet attaches the top member and the bottom member. A cut off tool is actuated by an actuator to cut off the mandrel flush with the rivet head. Transducers and a process controller monitor the installation process and actuate the cut off blade upon determining that the blind rivet is properly installed.

摘要: According to the invention a hollow cylindrical shank of electrically conducting metal is connected to a resistance welder. A coolant supply tube passes through the shank and has an interior coolant supply passage. The coolant supply tube has an outer diameter less than the inner diameter of the hollow cylindrical shank. A weld cap seats on the shank and has a cap tip and a cap skirt that depends from the cap tip and is attached to the shank. An underside of the cap tip faces the shank and the supply tube. A coolant receiving bore formed into the underside of the weld cap extends into the cap tip to receive the coolant supply tube part way into the bore. The bore formed into the underside of the cap tip defines a bore sidewall that provides added area of heat transfer contact between the coolant and the cap tip.

摘要: An improved cooling system for adapting to a two-component welding electrode device having a shank and cap, includes a retractable nozzle tube, a manifold, and an adjustment element for adjustably interconnecting the tube and manifold. A threaded bushing or plunger is attached to the tube and operable to adjust the distance between the interior surface of the cap and the outlet of the tube to a preferred distance. A threaded sleeve interconnects the tube and bushing for additional adjustability. The tube defines an elastically compressible bellows section, and a spacer is removably attached to the distal end of the tube for automatic adjustment of the outlet position by the cap.

The vehicle has a first ground clearance in response to the door being closed and the step retracted and a second ground clearance in response to the door being open and the step deployed. The first ground clearance, which is defined by the vehicle and is independent of the step apparatus, is equal to or greater than the second ground clearance.

摘要: A blind rivet assembly is inserted through aligned holes provided in a top member and bottom member. The blind rivet includes a rivet head that abuts the top member and a hollow rivet shank integral with the rivet head. A mandrel includes a mandrel stem that extends thorough the hollow rivet and a mandrel head that abuts the terminal end of the rivet shank. A tool holds the rivet head in contact with the top member and forcibly withdraws the mandrel in the direction to exit the aligned holes to thereby cause the mandrel head of axially collapse and radially expand the terminal end of the rivet shank into engagement with the bottom member to thereby attach the top member and the bottom member together. Weld current is then applied to the rivet head to thereby weld the blind rivet in place.

A first workpiece is provided that is made of a material that conducts electricity, and a second workpeiece is provided that is made of a material that conducts electricity and has a plurality of projections formed therein. A materail is applied between each projections of plurality of projections, the material having electrical conductivity that is lower than the conductivity of the second workpiece. An area of the first workpiece is disposed at the plurality of projections of the second workpiece, and electricity is conducted through the first workpiece and through at least one of the plurality of projections of the second workpiece.

摘要: Friction stir fastener equipment and method in which a series of friction stir rivets are rotatably mounted in a supply station and a computer controlled arm terminating in a rotating working head having special gripping jaws that precisely locates and grips a selected rivet. The arm then moves the rotating rivet and progressively drives it into the work until a frictionally heated and plasticized zone of material around the shank of the rivet begins to solidify. The jaws then release the rivet from the drive so that the rivet rotation decelerates to zero. Sufficient hardening of the zone effects the completion of one stir riveting cycle which may be automatically repeated.
